I'm using Comodo Antivirus right now and it's good for surfing but it's shit when it comes to resources or letting your computer do the things it should do. You have to let it 'accept' everything it does (let application STEAM launch .exe Half-Life 2? COULD BE A VIRUS LOL) and even when you exit it it leaves some ten applications still running. What are your favorite, preferably free, antiviruses?
Pandacloud.

Can't go wrong with Avast, it has a silent/gaming mode and it just an all around really good piece of software - http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
Microsoft Security Essentials
I use this. Has yet to fail me. It runs will scan in the background and I won't even notice.
MSE is pretty silent but still gets the job done well
Microsoft Security Essentials
This all the way. Pretty much maintains itself.
NOD32 seems to sit nice and quietly in the background, even with real-time scanning enabled.
Nod32 Smart Security is the best, never get any viruses and extremely lightweight stand-alone program
Love nod32, has yet to fail me.
mse is master race
Nod32 is very good.
AVG has a "gaming mode", and it works great. non-intrusive.
avira
Avast has a gaming/silent mode, as do basically every other antivirus program it seems!

No guys norton is the best
WiniBluSoft.
Clamwin - no realtime scanner, but still a decent line of defence if you set it up to automatically scan email and downloads. And definitely one of the lightest AVs out there.
Avast or NOD32 if you want anything that won't disturb your gaming. I don't know much about microsoft security essentials though.
I use Avira, have had no problems so far...
I use this. Has yet to fail me. It runs will scan in the background and I won't even notice.
I fucking noticed because my CPU fan shot the fuck up. Really annoying when reading or watching something.

I use Nod 32 which is super awesome fantastic.
I love AVG Free. Does the job but doesn't get in the way of everything.
Definitely MSE!
Avast won't bug you or ask you about useless shit all the time either. I use it and I've been using it for 4 years.
Nod32
When I would usually have to do manual scans frequently and remove shit from 3 family PCs, I got my mother to replace WhoreTon antivirus with a 3 pack of NOD32 2 year subscriptions. Installed them on both my brother's machines and my mom's machine and haven't had ANY problems since. My brothers can still play the odd Garry's Mod game without slowdown. AVG didn't do shit for these guys, I had it installed on both their computers and on one it just shat up the computer and on the other it didn't stop a ton of infections. If you want actual protection, I would go with NOD32, though if you want free I'd go with MSE, since that's what everyone is recommending. Personally, I use Common Sense 2010. It let me down twice since 2006, though I really needed an excuse to reinstall Windows either way.
Free antivirus MSE Paid Nod32
