• Running Virtual Machines

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit Home on my HP Touchsmart. I have a 3TB external from which I'd like to run a VM. The reason is I want to run some of the Win 8 builds from HERE without damaging any files. I googled, but no one really explains how to accomplish it. So I came here :) My question is twofold: 1) How do I do this and, 2) Will it be safe for the files on my external? (I have my Adobe Master Collection on it and I don't want any damage.)
Use a program like VMware Player or VirtualBox [editline]7th January 2012[/editline] And yes it would be safe for your files on your external hard drive. The start up and load time will suffer though because it's going through USB

I kinda wanna try to get this right the first time, as I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing :P
From what I just read VirtualBox give you better success when trying to install Windows 8
From what I just read VirtualBox give you better success when trying to install Windows 8
Excellent :) Thank you!
what about the virtual PC tool that comes with win 7 pro? will that work well for win 8? i want to do the same thing OP wants
I use Vmware Workstation, Virtual PC is much less flexible then Vmware Workstation and Virtualbox, my best guess is no. But don't let that stop you from trying.
I Downloaded VirtualBox. I've got the machine its self up, but the Win 8 build is taking forever to download. 45 mins left... I have a feeling it'll work, though. Part of the reason it's taking so long is because I'm downloading everything directly to the external. The rest is because my brother's on xbox live.

It keeps your files very safe from the virtual machine's files.

The mistake I made with my last computer was I downloaded everything. I filled that thing up to the point that it just got too sluggish to deal with. That, and it was 5 yrs old by the time I replaced it. On top of that, I was lucky enough to find the 3TB external on sale. Why not at least try to use it, you know? If it performs poorly streaming from the external, I'll just transfer everything and remake the machine.

They don't really care where the virtual hard drive is. You can literally copy + paste it anyplace (to another computer even) and it will be exactly the same as you last used it. You don't need to remake anything (except maybe reconfigure some of the basic stuff like RAM and all that). Though I'm sure the external drive will be fast enough. Its not like your going to be using it in a situation where high speed performance is critical.
you're running it over a USB connection shit will be laggy
I know, but I'm ok with that. Adobe Premier is laggy when I use it too, but it saves so much space on my computer.

It sounds like you want to just install Windows on your external, not run a VM.
It sounds like you want to just install Windows on your external, not run a VM.
The leaked builds I'm using can damage files. And I'm wanting to experience the OS.
