Im a little unsure on what the right way is to spread thermal compound. Ive seen people spreading a thick layer of it over the whole of the CPU, people putting a tiny grain of it onto the top of the CPU and people making a circle shape with the compound. What would be the right way of doing this for an Intel i5 750.

The easy way out is just to put a pea-sized amount in the middle and attach the cooler, which will spread it out.
If you actually wanna spread it manually, just wrap some cling film around your finger and spread it that way, or use a credit card.

and dont make the layer too thick
