And that's why you should get Kickstarter involved.
"The unanimous opinion among all publishers that we pitched TimeSplitters 4 to is that you can't market a game that is based around a diverse set of characters and environments – you need a clear and easily communicated marketing message, and TimeSplitters doesn't have one."
Why is that? Do they think everyone is stupid and if the game doesn't follow a single theme they'll get confused and not want it?
The story was actually interesting, pity the gameplay was just bland.
Haze's or Timesplitter's? I don't know much about Haze but Timesplitter's plot, in my opinion, wasn't that bad. Ridiculous, yes, but it more than made up for it with its humor and over the topness.
Also Ir1shfox where is your avatar from? It's amazing.
So because they made one bad game that somehow lead to them going "Oh well this game turned out shit so obviously a fourth installment to a well loved and perfectly great game series is a bad idea."
Shitty excuse.

So is this why modern games are so uncreative?

Not only is this sort of mindset one of the big reasons why gaming is really starting to stagnate, it's also flat out wrong. The fact that there's a metric ass-ton of people out there that want TS4 (and are quite vocal about it) prove that it isn't the case.

The quote in the article has impacted me. I honestly didn't think that this was a significant part of the reason why original and creative outside-the-box games never got the support that mainstream AAA titles get. Either it was denial or just the fact that it was too ridiculous to believe true. In reality though, I guess it is as simple as publishers wanting cookie-cutter formulas for games which are perfectly mediocre, but impossible to fail. Taking risks to make better games isn't worth it to them when they can make a repeat game which is marketable.

timesplitters easily communicated message is that the protagonist travels through goddamn time.

At this point, publishers want games that are like Call of Duty and kin, quick and easy to make with plenty of recyclable elements, similar gameplay between IPs, and an easily packaged theme that lends to a lot of over-the-top action.

Correct me if I'm wrong or missing the point, but I can think of quite a few series with diverse characters and environments, such as the Uncharted Trilogy, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, and Borderlands 2. Last I checked, those games sold rather well and were marketed well.

The cost to make video games is increasing, publishers don't want to take risks.

While its partly the publisher's fault, particularly when communicating with the consumer, I feel like the stagnation is at least partly due to consumers as well. Look at facepunch. We rant and rave about every new Call of Duty game and how big name publishers are "copy/pasting" their games, but when an established IP tries anything new it gets flamed for "forgetting its roots".

Oh boy, don't get me started on those kind of people.
[editline]27th November 2012[/editline]
Although it doesn't help that a good deal of established IPs that tried something "new" decided the new direction was going to be copying COD.
Medal of Honor, Battlefield, Crysis, ect.
Most of those are EA IPs though that did that.
So is this why modern games are so uncreative?
There are tons of creative modern games what are you talking about.
A Timesplitters made by the current holders of the IP doesn't seem like a good idea to me, i really can't see them bringin' the humor and art style back.
knowing how bland everything Crytek usually makes "Still interresting titles. Some of them atleast." i don't think making a new one is the way to go without the old team.
They've got a game called Warface planned for crying out loud.

Thought you meant TimeSplitters for a second there.

While we're on Haze, the only fun part of it was to OD on nectar

Up until the last one, they were all First Party Developers. First Party Devs have a lot more leeway because they can focus in on a single platform.
Borderlands 2 was diverse like TF2, you get a character, make some snippy lines give them strengths and weakeness and bam.

Also, this line of thought is retarded. Its now a legitimate media form which means you have to dig through the normal garbage to get at the meat and potatoes.
I don't understand how Haze motivated Free Radical to go "bust" and integrate into Crytek, it was a good attempt but I'd still buy TS4 any day if it is being developed.
Haze was kinda bland, the story was pretty good but the execution wasn't pretty.
