• Steam Controller isnt getting detected by Steam

So, i have the dongle plugged in, i have the controller on, but it defaults to desktop Kb + M mode, checked Big Pictures settings and its not listed, tried X + Power button, wont connect still, what do? So far i've tried running Steam in administrator mode and i cant tell where it is in device manager, not sure what the deal is. [editline]19th January 2017[/editline] To clarify, the controllers worked in the past fine, im not sure what exactly could be causing this.
does the computer recognize the dongle? (as in you can hear the sound when it's plugged in). otherwise, i'd try uninstalling the driver for the steam controller if possible. for reference, i have a dongle that's pretty much dead and the computer couldn't see it, but luckily since i bought two controllers i had one spare handy.

Checked the batteries?
Checked the batteries?
Yes the controller turns on and beep bloops just fine. Haptics too.
Yes the controller turns on and beep bloops just fine. Haptics too.
Does it do the thing where the light on the power button flashes and it turns off after 5 seconds, or is it staying on until you turn it off?

just to get the obvious shit out of the way, have you tried both the release and beta branches of steam? if you think manually resetting the controller's firmware would help, here's a guide to do that as well: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=572740074 it actually seems to be pretty easy
Stays on until i turn it off.
Well if you didn't change default settings in this regard, then it sounds like the controller is connected to the machine, it's just steam not recognizing. If you can, check if it works on another computer.

Reinstalling steam may unfuck you if nothing else works If you have game folders in odd places you also don't have to worry and can just do this

Actually, i cant get the damn thing to turn off by pressing the button now, nor will it go into that pairing state with x + power button.
I'm sure you tried but have you connected it via a MicroUSB cable? I believe that would bypass any hassle the dongle might be giving you and can rule that out.
Valve will exchange it for a new one if you wanna go that route, just make it clear to them that yours is defective
Is it defective though? It was working fine last time i used it (which was a few months ago but still)
If you have Razer stuff installed previously, open Device Manager, connect the controller and see if the controller was detected as Razer controller. If it was, uninstall that driver and reconnect the steam controller. At least that was my friend's problem when I lent him my steam controller.

Okay, im bumping this as ive come across a bizarre issue. So steam is detecting my controller now... Aaand it thinks its an xbox controller. [editline]4th March 2017[/editline] Theres also a mysterious 360 controller in my Devices and Printers. Ive unplugged everything and its still there. I think it and this weird detection thing only happened when i put the dongle in another USB port. The fuck.
Okay so the controller works and is detected now, BUT only when wired from startup. I think my dongle is fucked up, and for some unknown reason it makes steam think the controller is a 360 controller.
Just a question, have you used the dongle to get a PS3/PS4 controller to work with your computer? [MotionJoy/Better DS3 etc.] Because that "installs" onto a bluetooth dongle, or something to that level. It essentially makes the dongle only work with a PS3/PS4 controller, and then emulates it into a xbox 360 controller for windows to work with it. Or something like that. I also remember motion joy being a bit fiddly with ports, so that's why this sounds very familiar to me. If this is the case, to fix it would be to use the same program to "uninstall" that feature from the bluetooth dongle and it will then revert to it's normal state, and probably work properly with your steam controller again. If it isn't, well I hope the dongle's just fucked.
