Ok, I play A LOT of Bad Company 2 and it kind of lagged on my old build. So I upgraded my old 9600GT to a GTX 460. Only problem is that my CPU is a Core 2 Dup E7500, and so that's bottlenecking my rig and lagging the fuck out of BC2 to the point that it's completely unplayable. So I must upgrade my CPU (derp). I was just wondering if I should go for an i7 2600k or an i5 2500k? I am planning to play a lot of Battlefield 3, too which will probably be CPU intensive like BC2. Which one would suit me more? I can afford either one, it'll just take longer to get the money for an i7. Here are the prices (I live in Australia and PC parts cost a fuckton more):
Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked 3.3Ghz 6Mb Cache Sandy Bridge 4C/4T CPU LGA1155 SB2500K $212.00
Intel Core i7 2600K LGA1155 3.4Ghz 6Mb UNLOCKED CPU 4C/8T Turbo Boost SB2600K $315.00
Prices take from here: http://www.netplus.com.au/products-listing.asp?code=CP1&group=Intel%20LGA1155%20Core%20i3,%20i5%20and%20i7%20CPUs
Just in case you really need my specs that much:
Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93GHz (overclocked to 3.3GHz)
4096MB of RAM
nVidia GTX 460 w/ 2784MB VRAM (that's what DX Diag says anyway, even though the box says 1GB VRAM :I)
So yeah, what's your opinions? i5 or i7?
Definitely get the i5 2500K, currently it is said that, that is the best gaming CPU on the market. Unless you are doing some other heavy CPU intensive tasks (i.e. video editing), then go for the i7 if you have $ to throw down. The i5 is really the pinnacle of processing power for gaming now.

Ok I'll go for the i5. That'll sure save me some DOSH.
You're probably aware, but I just want to make sure
you know that you'll have to get a new mobo/RAM with that CPU, right?
Yes I do know I need to get a new motherboard (LGA1155 chipsets 'n' all), but new RAM? Didn't know about that. Please explain I'm kinda nooby with this stuff.
I'm also still running a 500W PSU, so I have to upgrade that, too.
2500k doesn't support ddr2, you'll need ddr3
Can I have the model to your PSU? Also, I'm saying you'd have to get new RAM since most socket 775 boards use DDR2 while socket 1155 uses DDR3
Oh, my 775 motherboard uses DDR3 RAM and I got 2 2GB sticks of it so it should be good. And holy shit I just realised my PSU is a Thermaltake 430W. Fuck that's not even enough to power my GPU.
OK I need more help. My specs are in the OP, question is: how much power would I need? And also, I'm kind of cheaping out on the motherboard and power supply. Is this bad? Some friends of mine tell me I really shouldn't :|
what PSU/motherboard are you planning on getting?
Power supply yes, mobo not so much. 650W should be good

What's your budget and what have you currently chosen
and no you don't want to go cheap on a PSU, it's the component providing power to every other component, would you want to trust $1000 in hardware to a $20 off the shelf piece of shit that lacks basic protections
the mobo depends on your needs, how much upgradability you want and what you're using it for, generally the P67A-G__ (43 or 45) or P67A-GD__ (53 or 55) are good for most 2500k builds and are SLi/Crossfire compatible for a cheaper graphics card upgrade than buying a single card better than 2xcurrent card (depending on the specific circumstances)
[editline]19th July 2011[/editline]
also 430W would be fine for the build in the OP, depending on the quality of the PSU itself and how much of the advertised 430W is on the 12V rail
You'll need ddr3 ram. Your best option is utilizing triple channel technology. So your cheapest option is getting 3x2gb ddr3.

no
you have no idea what you're talking about, H67/P67/Z68 use dual channel

Please gtfo out of pc building. Only the high end i7's (Not sandybridge) support triple channel.

You mean the old ones.
Sandybridge is the new highend, overclocked and i7-2600k beats the 980x. (Or whatever that £800 Gulftown one is.)

2600k doesnt beat a 980x in a application that can actualy use 6 cores afaik.
But still, those are the highest end intel cpu's that support triple channel.
I'm think of a budget of around $400 all up. I know it's really bad. These are the parts I'm thinking of getting, yes it does have to be from this shop:

I am thinking of maybe buying another 460 later on and hook 2 up together for SLI.
That PSU looks like an IED.

<< This retard doesn't know what that means :S
<< This retard doesn't know what that means :S
A cheap PSU will most likely explode in your face killing some parts.
Go with a reliable brand like XFX, Silverstone, etc.
Fuck...
Gonna have to increase my budget then.
with a 2500k you want a P67 or Z68 motherboard
do you know of any other sites you can use, the product selection on there is crap
Just went on Whirlpool (Aus PC forum), found some different stores:

http://foxcomp.com.au/
http://stormcomputers.com.au/catalog/
http://vtechindustries.com.au/ (this one is online only apparently)
http://www.ple.com.au/
Also I'm looking to spend around $400 - $500 on the parts. I can increase that budget if I need to, but I'd like it to be cheap as possible. Thanks for the help guys :D
