God, I keep forgetting they actually ported this to PC.
Did anybody ask for this?
It's really really bad. Really really really bad. Really Really Really Really bad.
Think Order 1886 but Microsoft. In fact, the two games are practically conjoined twins in their ineptitude (seriously though they do fall flat in startlingly similar ways).
is'nt this barley a game and just q/a movie that can be beaten under 5 hours

The story is absolutely retarded.

Hahaha... On par with the sword-play...

I regret buying this just as much as I did getting bad rats copies sent to me
I tried on Xbone and during the first mission, there's a part where you man a machine gun and mow down loads of barbarians running around rome. I'm not joking.
So does the game look amazing? The Order 1886 was only worth playing because the graphics were flawless. Pleasure can be derived from just appreciating the technical aspects but I don't think that kind of pleasure is worth much money since tech demos are usually free
fun game if you can get it for <$10

this looks like it could of been a really fun fight if it was made properly
Ryse isn't a bad game. It was one of the original Xbox One titles which was more of a hardware display if anything. Graphics are fantastic, animations are superb (especially during the QA finishers), its authenticity borders on "realistic" and straight up "Hollywood" but it gives a generally good mix of both to create a simple, cinematic experience. The finishers are pretty much the best part of the game. There are so many and they're excitingly brutal to watch. Despite flashing the button you need to press to get the kill right, it will follow through regardless. So, if you press Y instead of X during the QA, the move continues all the same.
Unfortunately, probably because it WAS a hardware display type of game, Ryse falls short for a "full" game. Its story is OK but it lacks any real depth and it's only just about 5 hours long so you can easily play it in one sitting on a lazy afternoon. Aside from looking pretty and displaying some kickass finishers in Combat, everything else is run-of-the-mill videogame-ism: Rapid fire, infinite ammo ballista's that are conveniently located directly in front of a massive horde of barbarians most of the time, the sword play outside of the finisher sequences are basic and just a grind fest (block, smash smash smash, icon to finish comes up, hit finisher button, watch death sequence, rinse and repeat). You'll block, light attack, heavy attack and dodge through the entire game, occasionally throwing a Pilum or two when you find them. Some of the ideas in the game are interesting and could have been expanded upon one day but Ryse is but one game.
There is competitive and cooperative multiplayer which takes the form of Gladiatorial combat with a twist; the arena shapes and shifts as you play as it tells a "story" of its own as you fight. You customize your gladiator with different equipment with stats to help boost damage, health or crowd favor which impacts your final score which ultimately impacts your experience and THUS leveling up. Same combat finishers in multiplayer with the added bonus of doing it with a friend on the barbarian hordes so you get some cool dual finishers.
Bottom line: If you want to play a simple, yet beautiful to look at hack and slash game with some of the best and cinematic kills that I've seen to date, without caring much for a deep story or groundbreaking experience as a whole, then you should get Ryse. It's mindless fun but nothing invokes the movie Gladiator quite like watching your character hack through hordes of barbarians in cinematic glory. I recommend picking it up for dirt cheap if you can, like if it was 5 bucks. Average game, holds its own and was just a taste of some of the potential it could have as a triple A title but of course that never came to be, so far.
Andddd if you want to play a good gladiator game play Spartan Total Warrior

I had forgotten how fast and unnatural the animations looked.

It could be a fun game, I haven't played it, but it's authenticity borderlines on "the writer has seen an episode of Asterix" (or read an issue, you get the gist of it). Very, very little of this game is even close to actual history. I wouldn't honestly even feel bad about buying a game for like 10-20 bucks if it had a nicely made representation of ancient Rome, but I've watched a playthrough of Ryse and it's pretty damn awful.
Yeah barbarians just literally invade the HEART of Rome out of nowhere. Comes as a surprise. Heyyy gotta get that intro drama somewhere, right?

They should release a VR version where you do nothing but walk around ancient Rome.

Walking around historical sites is more appealing than the game we got.

I really wish someone would some day create an "authentic" virtual reality replication of ancient Rome, what with the colourful buildings and statues and all.
