• Program to let guest accounts only use the internet?

I'm on vacation, and my laptop is our ONLY computer, so we all need to use it to check email\screw around\etc. Only problem is, last time we did this, they downloaded programs to "make themselves feel at home" and I wind up with a shitton of viruses and had to format my drive. So basically, I need a program that lets them only use the internet, and not download anything. Is there something like that for Vista? And I also have an external drive that I use for basically everything, and I don't want them to be able to read\write it. Is that possible as well? Knowing them, they'll just plug it in if I take it out.
Look into getting a program called DeepFreeze. It's used to preserve the drive in its original state every time it is rebooted. Even if they install anything upon reboot it will be gone.
Problem is, I'm using it too, I only want to put the lock on my guest account.
Problem is, I'm using it too, I only want to put the lock on my guest account.
DeepFreeze can be disabled by entering a password before the computer boots. I suppose it might be a nuisance to always shutdown/reboot when you're finished using it for a little bit though.
Yeah, rather just lock them out from doing anything.
Just tell them not to download anything because last time they gave you a ass-ton of viruses.
Yeah, that won't work.
Doesn't the guest account on Vista clean itself after every reboot/log off? I'm sure at the very least you could group policy the fuck out of it to make it only use FF or whatever.
I don't think so, and even if it does, if they get a virus on the HDD, I doubt it'll just get wiped clean. And you're not getting that I can't just tell them to only do X and expect them to actually listen. I need to lock them out from doing it, or they'll do it. My step dad is a dumbass who is convinced that he knows everything and anything on any subject we're talking about, my mom barely knows how to use a computer and opens every attachment she gets, and my sister is the same. They also insist on getting AIM and shit like that so they can talk to their friends.
You could set up a limited user account for them and turn up UAC, if you're on Vista.
if you using IE then go into tools-internet options-security-custom level then scroll down to downloads and disable them and they cant download anything i tryed it to make sure it works.

Plus I'm using firefox.
Shit i wish you were using xp
DeepFreeze can be disabled by entering a password before the computer boots. I suppose it might be a nuisance to always shutdown/reboot when you're finished using it for a little bit though.
You need to enter a password while it's running to disable, and reboot.
Any way I can get that without the Windows Genuine Advantage?
Pick one a) Password the computer :smugdog: b) Hide firefox in a file somewhere that your relatives can't find it. Put Internet in and do the custom security thing mentioned above Then you use Firefox because you know where it is. Just say it had an error or something. c) Or you could set everything else to Admin only and password your account

My mom gets business emails, and my step sisters mom is paranoid about her so she has to call her all the time via skype due to us having no service in mexico.
Eeebuntu and don't give root password.

Protip: Don't let them use your computer Or make them use a virtual i don't know
Parental controls. I don't know if you have that outside of Ultimate, but it's worth mentioning.

I thought guest accounts weren't allowed to install / change programs? If not by default, I could swear there was a setting for it, along with only letting the guest account use authorized programs by the administrator. If that doesn't work, you can always get a Linux live CD and let them use that instead, that way they can't screw up anything on your laptop.
Install Virtualbox and use a virtual OS for their internet usage. That way they shouldn't be able to screw things up.

I installed that steady state and got it setup, but when I lock my computer, only administrator shows up on the login screen...
