except you'd be found out almost instantly, especially if theres no actual mod and its literally just malware. if you can hack into a popular users account, you can put it on several mods that have possibly hundreds or even thousands of uploads every few days. not to mention that they've been verified time and time again so people aren't going to be cautious when installing them.

I think someone was commenting on the news post on the Nexus itself that they got a mod update via NMM, which asked to run an external tool - without really paying attention they clicked yes and malware got installed.
