So last night i spent about 3 hours working on a project in Windows Live Movie Maker (I know, not the best product but i just needed it for very simple things). I literally have not touched anything, today i try to open the work in progress and all audio and video are mute and its just a black screen, only like 3 pictures i imported are still there. I have no idea what happened, i was obviously using a compatible file type because i closed and re-opened the project probably 20 times yesterday with no problems. I also have kept every video i imported on my desktop so i couldn't lose it, and they all work fine if i play them individual from the desktop. Today when i try to import the exact same videos from my desktop, they now show up blank on import. ANY ideas? If i have to re-do this project im gunna be pissed.
You used a Microsoft product to produce a video. That is what happened. In all seriousness, it might be a codec issue. Look into some Windows Media codecs and stuff.
Use Sony Vegas or Adobe Elements, that's the best solution you got.

kdenlive does a whole bunch of stuff and it's god damn free. Don't let the website fool you, it's pretty solid for simple video editing.

I like premiere more, it also seems more powerful. But yeah, it's shits expensive.

I find Movie Studio a great alternative to it's expensive counterparts (I've used both and I like how Pro works great on my desktop while Movie Studio runs like a stallion on my laptop)
I use Final Cut Pro at University but they have the Adobe package there and I use Vegas at home. Now I completely use Premiere and After Effects. So much better!
I'm not gonna lie I was sort of disappointed when OP didn't provide a guide on how to have sexual relations with Movie Maker.
Have you tried turning it off and on again
Not even kidding, i just got home and un-slept my PC. The video actually worked, except my headphones provided no audio (a strange occurrence that can only be fixed by pushing "restart" and then canceling when it asks if i should force close all programs) so i fixed them, reopened the video and everything was black again. WTF
kdenlive.
Or openshot. Which is being ported to windows soon.
I'm laughing way harder at the thread title then i should be right now

I always export Lagarith , 44khz 16bit and just do it in x264.

At the very least you can use Premiere Pro. I think Adobe still has that invisible downloads page up. Can't tell you how to directly find it though.

Some people don't want to learn a new OS just to do a basic task that they could do just fine on Windows.
