all I know is that it took ages to get finished. How is this game atm?
i played it just now for like an hour, it seems pretty good! the controls feel tight unlike a lot of shooter mmos

Looks very generic, anything special in there?
If there's retarded grinding elements this won't last long nor grow much.
Literally every MMO out there just banks on grinding way too much and gives you nothing else to go off of. Starting to wonder how the fuck people can get sucked into all these different MMOs when it's nothing but grinding 90% of the time.
I'll give it a chance for free.

Mainly because a lot of people like to feel like they've earnt something.
I don't understand why they added in an actual levelling system. I much preferred it when you advanced by simply creating better gear, but now everything is locked behind pointless grindy levels.
I played it two months ago. Let's just say you need someone to travel with, or else it won't be as interesting. Though there are some classes to try out and you get EXP on your suit rather than a profile and you can upgrade said suit, there weren't many weapons to choose from. Also be ready to run slowly across the map, because you ain't getting a vehicle any time soon. Though there are jump gliders which are really fun to use to travel around, they aren't everywhere. Co-operation part is quite good and the controls are great. I liked how shooting worked and how players are involved to complete random missions that appear on map.

Yea, I played it a year and a half ago during closed beta and it basically was 'released' not so long ago.
I played this when the closed better first started and the PvE consisted of placing a thumper on the ground and killing shit that came to attack it. It was almost impossible to solo as any class, so people would just crowd around one thumper and murder everything instantly and the PvP was really hard to play because the queue times were sooooooo long due to no players. Then they added some world bosses for PvE iirc and I tried it again but they were buggy so I stopped again. This game is probably one of the few beta tests I've been in where I just couldn't bring my self to actually test because there was so little to do.
It's been a long time since it was in beta, is it actually worth playing now?
I just downloaded it to try it out, and I'm off to a great start. I entered my insignia, the first thing you're greeted with. for some reason I had a lagspike, and it gave me a red error which looked like an error you'd get from compiling something with errors. I tried to exit, but all menus were transparent with nothing on them. music and voice kept playing even though I logged out, which also had transparent stuff going on. I exited the game, booted back up and tried entering the insignia again. this time I was given an error that you can only have 1 character per account, and as far as I know, you can't delete characters at that point. so I logged out again and chose my second email to make a new account, but it says the email is already used but I have no account on that email
I don't think I'll be playing this then

'anytime soon'? you get a craftable LGV at level 25 in dredge. maybe its just because i have a 25% exp boost, but either way i dont think it takes very long to get to that point as long as you level efficiently.
having put 80 hours into the game since the...23rd or so, and having only put in around 7-8 hours when i originally got into the beta in 2012 or something, im liking it a lot more. you have your typical MMO-styled quest boards that are "travel [x] meters, kill thing, travel [x] meters, talk to person, go here, kill more guys, report back", which is currently one of the best ways to get EXP. however, the combat is very fun, and even more so with friends. most of my time playing has been alone as the facepunch army has been pretty barebones in having people to play with, and none of my friends have shown that much interest in playing it (save two, although we are very differenced in levels between each other so thats no help). ARES missions, which are basically side missions that spawn randomly here and there and take around 5-8 minutes to complete, and can be done solo or in a group, help break up the monotony of grinding board quests. these, however, are currently not spawning at the rate that they are supposed to. im not sure if this is on purpose or a bug, but most signs point towards being a bug.
there USED to be chosen (the main enemy in the game) attacking the starting area a ton, but they have been incredibly toned down for whatever reason. the little time that i played years ago, they were incredibly aggressive in what they were doing. now its just attack groups here and there trying to attack a watchtower. ive heard that theyve disabled certain chosen activities due to an exploit, so that might be the case? dunno, either way it sucks that those arent occuring atm
traveling is a burden in the game, youre gonna be walking around a lot until you get an LGV, or you were lucky enough to have been in the beta and got free VIP which gives you a glider pad. once you do get an LGV though, traveling becomes a lot more efficient.
being F2P, paywalls are of course one of the biggest worries. a player CAN just buy the frames they want, aka the more advanced ones a person cant choose right away, however most of what matters is either dropped in combat, rewarded in quests or bought through the marketplace with in-game money. there isnt much of a paywall, and it cant really be P2W either if the main focus of the game is PvE. just as long as you put the time and effort in, youll be powerful.
overall, give it a try. i certainly enjoy it a lot more than i did 2 years ago. they still have a lot to iron out and fix/improve on, which they hopefully will. its free, so it cant hurt either
and for the long time for release since the beta phases, as jeff of giantbomb put it (which, by the way, look at the quicklook of it if you want to, but just know that they play it HORRIBLY. even the comments of that video point it out), firefall is one of those games where you go "holy shit thats out?" and "holy shit that wasnt out already?" at the same time.
also, the final (current) area of the game shows the most promise. the enemies are more fun/harder to fight there compared to the rest of the game (which, lets be honest, is a cakewalk and needs to be upped), players are currently being rewarded with another form of crystite which they put into a machine in order to push back the curtain and reveal more of the current area. its pretty cool, and there are chosen attacks frequently and ARES missions seem to spawn a lot more there than other areas as well for some reason?
Game's buggy as shit, there's a ridiculous amount of balance issues because after leaving the game in beta for years the devs saw fit to pretty much completely overhaul the open world and progression systems and release on steam two weeks later without bugtesting or feedback from the players
It's a shame because the core gameplay is good and the game has a lot of potential but this is shaping up to be one of the most botched releases of this year. I just hope they can recover in time.
I heard this game kind of sucks.
It doesn't suck, there are a lot of good ideas and the basic gameplay is super satisfying, there just isn't a whole lot of content to keep you coming back other than grinding, and the grinding is typical F2P absurd.
Firefall is the underdog game that I really want to see succeed because clearly immense work and a lot of creative thought went into it but they just can't seem to find the magic element to tie it all together.
Terrible design choices though, too much walking around for simple objectives that are honestly quite boring, to get from point A to point B then back again is such a pain, perhaps with the motorcycle they offer for 17,50 euro's, might make the game better, but honestly, I'd rather give that money to a complete, well designed game.
Waited a long time for it to become decent, I'm done waiting. Seeing what it could have been from a very old trailer, they didn't even come close to doing it justice.

Basically this. The game's got a pretty interesting/solid backstory and lore to it, characters have well built personalities, voice acting's wonderful in many, many cases, and the whole place just feels alive and moving with how it handles itself. Good example, if thump dump's under attack, nobody can call thumpers down till a group of players in the area clears out the invasion. Every part of this game seems to have an actual working reason to it; the whole game is just incredibly planned out. It's amazing to explore.
I would love to see this game become one of the big names in MMOs. It's obvious the developers care about Firefall a ton, but until they get that final bit in place, there's not much to keep you playing past the start.
What happened to the old levelling system? You used to be able to focus on specific parts of your frame and whatnot via several levelling trees.
Now its just a boring linear levelling system where you just gain levels and automatically get stronger. Where is the fun in that?

Getting new frames now without paying an outrageous amount of crystite or premium currency requires getting one frame to 40, which will let you unlock exactly one other frame.
They also moved jobs to a stationary board instead of popping up in the world dynamically and removed thumper assists. Some bizarre choices have been made in the year since I quit.

Ares missions still pop up in the world, just at a severely decreased rate. Devs say it's a bug, but it's been over a week by now.
A lot of the current design choices are questionable at best, but Red5 has shown that they aren't deaf to feedback and they're quite active on the forums engaging in discussions, so there's yet hope

Haven't played it with old system but that sounds so much better. Wonder why it was replaced.

That's good. One of the things I like about Firefall is that it's a game where I can get a couple of friends and we can just wander through the world, helping with Thumpers, doing random missions, fighting melding tornadoes etc.

Simplicity was the reason they gave.
Honestly, as someone who played way back in early closed beta, I still have fun with the game. And honestly, I prefer a standard leveling system compared to the buggy mess the individual part system was. It almost never worked right when I tried to upgrade anything.
The level system would be fine if it wasn't for it's extreme verticality, someone told me that a level 40 character does roughly 16x the damage of a level 1
They've also locked content behind levels so that you get barely any exp if you do activities in areas which are 5 levels above yours (which is perfectly possible to do, even without someone else carrying you).
Before you had a huge open world you could explore and do stuff in, now you do stuff in one zone untill you're high level enough to move to the other, and won't ever have any reason to go back there (untill you decide to start over with a new battleframe).
They had a sandbox and they turned it into a roller coaster.
Then once you maxed your frame you realize that all you have left is a couple of instances, and nothing else.
