Okay, so I have this insanely tiny PalmTop running windows 95 and with Wireless....

Anyways, MSN Messenger 5.0 is just with the specs and I want to install it but before I hassle with even trying to install it, will it even work? I don't remember if it was a rumor or something but apparently when Microsoft turned MSN into Windows Live they eliminated all support for all the older clients and would not let you login until you upgraded to the Live client. Is this true? It would kick so much ass if I could get this running MSN.
Couldn't you use Pidgin or something similar? Or is that too resource heavy?

I'm open to absolutely anything so long as it fits in my 8Mb ram and 40Mhz 486 hardware constraints.
I seem to remember having MSN Messenger 7 on an old laptop, and when I tried to login it said, 'An update is available' or something, and won't let you log on until you update to WLM.

Ah, so it was not a myth.
Hmm, will any of the third party MSN/Live clients then work on super-low specs like mine?
As darnok said, Pidgin might work, or you can try aMSN, but I doubt that would work.
You could also try Miranda. It is a very light client with only the most basic functions needed, ie. no emotes and stuff, only text support.

Ooh, that looks interesting.
Thanks.

Microsoft Chat for the Microsoft Network IRC thingee?
This reminds me of the the huge 5inch floppies I have of AOL in my garage.

No, it's just the bundled MSN client with Windows XP. Back when they had the .net passports and such.
I had a patch once to use a old msn but I don't know what is was or where I got it though, it was many hard drive formats ago.
Older versions of Windows Messenger/MSN Messenger (even 4.0) still work. Newer versions have got more gimmicks and shiny stuff: but the protocol stayed the same during all those years.
Therefore: yes - it should still work perfectly.
It's so cute :3:

Actually it went through about 18 main versions, without counting potential minor upgrades.
windows messenger is the best

Well that's expected from one of the worlds smallest portable computers. Hey, it runs Doom as well! :D
Yes that is quite nice piece of hardware, makes my AAO look like a giant. Why all netbooks aren't that size, as only the 1,5k$ POS UMPC:s are now...
You need to make another thread about your collection of computers.

lol shit how did I not see that. Is the OP from Japan? すごい
When installing Windows XP, you get a rather old version of MSN, not sure how old though, and it works just fine.
It's the very basics of MSN aswell. Only the standard smilies, no nudge or custom smilies.
I say give it a try.
pentium is the strangest most interesting character on this forum
