I need a new CPU (its the only part of my computer I've never touched) At the moment I'm using LGA775 conroe, with Asus Striker II MoBo Should I just get the best LGA775 CPU I can find, probably Q9550 or something similar or is it worth spending the extra on a new MoBo and Sandy Bridge CPU?
a Q9550 will almost cost just as much as a new mobo with a 2500k.
It's well worth buying a 2500K and a new mobo+ram. I would never invest in 775, it's almost the deadest of dead sockets that people still use.
Thanks. My plan was to get a 2500K anyway. But I just thought i'd get a second opinion, because I didnt want to do a whole new setup and then everyone tell me that I could've just stuck with 775

I've seen such things occasionally on craigslist. The best time to find such deals is after a college semester is over and students are leaving dorms. They either abandon perfectly usable machines, or sell them dirt cheap due to not being able to take them home.

But I would never buy a brand new 775 quad core like the Q6950 that can go for $250.
