Looked like a good buy, and I heard HP had a good reputation for decent laptops. Oh how i was wrong.
I've had several HP products, but i will not buy any future products from them. I own the HP TX1000, a laptop that worked fine for me for about a year, then suddenly stopped. coincidentally, the warranty is only one year. Like the Xbox360, it is plagued with overheating issues. Microsoft, having decency, honors their mistake and fixes the problem, free. The actual symptoms is all indicators and fans work, but the screen remains blank. Another early symptom is the wifi card fails.
Now these assholes at HP wont even bother with you once your 1 year warranty is up. I have made several calls to them, and thousands of others too with these laptops have also fallen under these problems. However, they continue to say it is the consumers fault.
The problem actually lies with the GPU resulting in a black screen. People have done the infamous towel trick on their laptops, and even blew they're hairdryers into vents for a temporary fix to extract data. There is also a fix which requires you to pry open your laptop, reset the solder with a light bulb by cooking it for a good 3 minutes, placing pressure over the GPU chip, and then placing a copper penny over the GPU to prevent it from happening again due to better conduction. Another solution is replacing the mobo all together but the problem will come back over time.
I have tried the towel trick and the hairdryer one, but again they are only temporary. I am going to try to send my motherboard to a store in the states via ebay, and I will get back to this thread to tell you how it went. (repair costs $60 shipping incl from canada to US versus a $200 mobo DIY repair).
They are several petitions, facebook groups, and threads on the issues. You can read about them here:

guys, I have a problem but it's all right because I signed an online petition so they HAVE to listen to me now
next time do research, I've seen so many stories of problems with HP laptops that they have now ceased to surprise or even interest me
The dvXXXX series have so many problems it's not even funny. We go through so many of them at work.
I had one of the Pavilion set of laptops (dv26000 or something?) which had the same issue. They fixed that because I'm a pushy bastard over the phone, and then the battery went, they wouldn't fix that because they'd written a note on my customer profile or something.

Model is dv2000.
The towel trick is about the dumbest thing you can do. If the solder melts completely, you'll just squish the solder balls between the GPU and motherboard and cause one massive short circuit.
You could try baking the board in the oven like they do to fix the Nvidia and ATI cards that get cracks in the solder joints.

For future reference, buy a Thinkpad.
Wewh.
I thought my laptop was a DV series for a second, it's a DS.

Oh shit that was a smudge it is a dv series.

I have done my research and I am informing others not to make the same mistake I did in purchasing such a shitty laptop. I am aware that an online petition isn't going to change a whole lot but what do you have to lose?
I had a DV8000 a few years ago and it melted the charger so that the piece that plugs into the computer fell out of the plastic.
They refused to do anything about it, and a new charger cost around $50, so I got a third party one. Then they claimed that I voided my 3 year extended warranty by using a third party accessory.
I'm so damn glad I wasn't able to buy that laptop now.
