This page shows my options. I'm leaning towards the Nexus 6P, I saw the thread in SH about how the developers of the S7 will restrict a lot of freedom when it comes to playing around with your phone. I don't know jack about phones though, it wasn't until about a few months ago that I got my first smart phone, and I really only use it for calling and texting as I don't have the luxury of data where ever I go. Since I'm going to be spending almost a grand on my phone, are there any theft protection services that I can get? I walk in and out of a high-crime neighborhood every day and I've seen people have their phones snatched in broad daylight on the intersections that I work on and the one that has my school's bus stop. Any general tips or info on phones would be much appreciated, thanks!
Wind should have plenty of data for you. I have an s5 and to put it in perspective alittle bit I have my phone rooted and unless I use the bootloader to delete samsung's security files the phone won't start the os at all. Unless you give a shit or know what rooting is you can probably get any phone you want. least the s7 has a micro sd again what a disaster the s6 was without one.
Since you don't seem to do a lot of super powerful shit with your phone I might recommend the moto x pure (canada might not have it, there's likely other variants) instead of a thousand dollar phone. It's got some good specs and build quality at a nice price, with good developer support so you'll have some ROMs available should you want them. Also as for your theft question. There's various anti-theft apps you can get that'll help you locate the phone if stolen, wipe it, etc.. I don't know any of them specifically though. Make sure you encrypt your phone, it'll be in your options menu, that means if a thief swipes your phone they can't extract your information from it, forcing them to just wipe it and sell it.

My brother installed a few security apps that block other apps from having access to all my information the second I download them, it also supposedly blocks shit running in the background that chug your phone's battery. TBH I don't really need it, only social media I use are snapchat and facebook, and I don't really plan on installing a bunch of random apps or games (GBA emulator is all I need, and I didn't mind dishing out a few bucks for the app). I don't mind sharing my info as long as it doesn't chug my battery life or make my phone run slower. I don't want to be forced to use my google+ or googleplay account or whatever it is every time I have to use an app though. And I guess any anti-theft app goes to shit as soon as they pull the battery out... Yea, I will definitely look into encryption.
Look into whether your carrier or retailer offers an accidental damage warranty if you think it's going to get dropped or stolen sometime in that time period (keep in mind some have deductibles and some don't). That's about the only surefire way to mitigate the effects of phone theft / damage.
