So yeah I'm starting this today. Would like to see what ideas FP comes up with.

If you get leather gloves, try to avoid getting them burned because they turn really stiff and you can't feel anything

unless it's a MIG or arc welder, that wouldn't turn out well
So! Had my first session yesterday
Quick safety induction and then I was off
Welded straight lines on a piece of metal with a MIG welder. Felt awesome to be able to put the mask down, you gotta' say "eyes" and it feels terrific.
Not to mention apparently being better on my first day than most apprentices do after a week of practice. Feelsgoodman.jpg
It's great fun. I learned in my high school ag mechanics shop on the old stick welders first. Real bitch to use those things at first but it eventually comes to ya, and then afterwards MIG might as well be breathing.
As for what to do to practice...bring in random bits of scrap iron and make sculptures. Write shit with the weld beads. I don't know how many dicks I drew onto the practice scrap when I was learning.
