BUILD OVER

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys, well my laptop which was my only personal computer broke a few weeks before the uni semester finished. But now I'm doing an internship over the summer and I'll be getting some cash, so it's time to build a PC.
I live in Perth, Australia BTW.
2 main local sites for me are: http://ple.com.au and http://msy.com.au
The build is mainly going to be for raw processor speed (compiling and rendering) hence the 2x SSDs in raid0, SSDs help a lot with compile time. But needs to have a pretty decent graphics cards to run the games/graphical project I make. Here's what I've got so far:
Processor
INTEL CORE i7 950 3.06GHz 8MB#
$350
Motherboard
ASUS P6X58D-E DESKTOP MOTHERBOARD#
$240
Graphics Card
VGA GTX460 SC EE 763M/3800M 1GB/DVI/HDMI#
$270
Hard drives
2x SSDs in raid0 for msvc, libs and OS.
OCZ VERTEX 2 60GB SSD 285/275 R/W/MB#
2x $170 = $340
1x WD 1TB for non-essentials
WD CAVIAR BLACK 1.0TB 7200/64MB/SATA3 #
$105
PSU
ANTEC TRUEPOWER NEW 750W MODULAR PSU#
$160
Case
ANTEC THREE HUNDRED GAMING CASE
$60
RAM
2x 6gig kit. kit is triple channel, so 3x 2gig sticks in each set
GEIL 6GB KIT DDR3 VALUE PLUS C9 1600MHz#
2x $115 = $230
Total price
$1750
So what do you think?
My questions to you guys:
Prices for individual parts look okay?
Everything look compatible?
Does it look like I should be able to chuck another GTX460 in there if I wanted to go with SLI some time down the road? I mean, does it seem like the case and motherboard will suit? I realise I'd probably need to upgrade the PSU if I were to do that.
What about my choice of mobo, case and PSU, these are the 3 things I have not looked into a whole lot.
Does that case have good cooling?
There is also a 120gig SSD for ~300 bucks but for a little bit more cash there is definitely a benefit going with 2 in raid 0 correct?
Sorry about the huge thread and lots of questions. Any answers will be much appreciated!
(massive edit)
so I guess you do need the i7
I still would suggest that you switch to 1156, because it'll probably be cheaper that way.
my suggestion on getting a better case still stands
so I would say get a decent P55 board, i7, with 4/8 GB of RAM
as for OP,
yes, everything looks compatible, and you can SLi, or even tri-SLi later if you want to, but the case might be a little too small for that, but I'm not sure.
That's absolutely terrible for a $1800 budget.
Get a i5 760, you don't need an i7 if you're only gaming.
Get a 580/480.
Why are you getting 2 SSDs? It's not like you'll need 2. Just get on and put your OS on it, I doubt you'll fill up 60gb.
Western Digital sucks ass compared to Spinpoints. Get a spinpoint f3.
PSU is alright.
Three hundred is a little small.
You don't need fucking 16gb of ram. No one needs that much ram. Get 4gb and your fine.

I guess he is going to need that i7 and quite a bit of RAM to compile and render, but you don't really need 12GB.
As I said, it's a workstation PC and I want it for raw processing power for compiling. I won't be gaming much on it at all. That's why I've got the low end GPU.
Although I've been reading up on SSDs in raid 0 and random reads and small writes seem to degrade with raid 0, so I'm considering going with the 120 gig SSD.

I know it's terrible, that's why I'm here.
Did you read my post though, I don't need this PC for gaming.

The idea is to speed compiling the fuck up. I've researched this already and compile times can drop a shit load using SSDs. Compiling many small files is a perfect application for an SSD.

It's 12 gigs of ram, and you don't seem to realise what the build is for. It's a workstation, I need to be able to compile a large application and have my entire work flow up (msvc, 3dsmax, photoshop, and the applicaiton running). 12 is not that expensive anyway, but I'll consider 8 when I have the final build items. Because I can always upgrade if I have to.
What would be a more appropriate case?

Can you recommend a good mobo from this list of 1156's: http://ple.com.au/?p=products&category_sub_id=144
So the i7 950 will work with those 1156s? What's the disadvantage?
Is this what you mean by a good p55? http://ple.com.au/?p=snapshot&inventory_id=519
jeez that website is really limited in terms of component variety
but maybe a HAF 922 or an Antec 900
[editline]wef[/editline]
and no, a 950 won't work; the 1156 board have their own line of i7s. but generally 1156 boards tend to be cheaper so that's why I suggested it
I would've said a MSI P55 board but the site doesn't have any.
maybe this one: http://ple.com.au/?p=snapshot&inventory_id=523
the one you posted above is good too, if you need USB 3.0

My bad, I thought you had x2 8gb.
You still don't need that much.
I would advise against putting SSD's in RAID unless you want to reformat them all the time because of no TRIM.
I would advise against putting SSD's in RAID unless you want to reformat them all the time because of no TRIM.
How would you suggest putting up the drives, then? I heard the SSD's in raid0 or whatever it means was fast only to realise it has its own flaws too.
So, how would you suggest setting up the storage drives? For future reference, for the generic gamer/photoshopper.. just simply HDD(s) ?
Use a single larger drive.
Why would you go off an make such an expensive build with a lga 1156? Get 1366.

That's what I have listed isn't it? Or are you talking about what Jaehead was saying?
jeez that website is really limited in terms of component variety
That's what happens when you live in Australia or New Zealand (or any other, non-America or European country). You either need to pay the premium for local parts (at least in NZ), or get them shipped over from the U.S. (which can end up costing more)
As for the build, it looks pretty solid for rendering/workstation.
Like you said, getting a 120GB SSD instead of 2 60GB ones will probably work better. If you're constantly editing huge videos/multiple images, you can always get more RAM (read: Only get 8GB to start with). The GPU should be more than enough to play most modern games at at least medium (the GTX 480 and 580's prices aren't justified by this kind of build). If you're worried about the amount of space the case will take, the Antec 300 looks just fine.
Well, that's just my 2 cents.
I would advise against putting SSD's in RAID unless you want to reformat them all the time because of no TRIM.
Actually, idle garbage collection works in RAID, you just have to have your drives idle for an hour per week or so, but i agree, one better drive is a better idea.

Woa, i hope you are referring to price per GB here, WDs last way longer, they are designed for 24/7 usage.
Thanks everyone for the input thus far.

Yeah basically, I can also buy from http://msy.com.au
I'm going to double check all the prices when the parts list is final.

I'm not really going to be constantly editing videos or lots and lots of large images, so yeah I've decided to go with 1x SSD. It's a lot less fuss in the long run, and whether or not TRIM works in raid is disputable. Really it's just a lot easier to go with 1. Especially since the random access time suffers a bit in raid (so I read).
And yeah, I will start with 8gig (and probably never need more  ).
So serious question
GPU looks okay, not bad for the price? brand is good?
I figure I can always chuck another one in SLI in a few years...
Also I'm not really worried about the amount of space the case takes. What I'm worried about in the case is:
-will fit the components
-good cooling
-will fit SLI okay
And I may eventually OC the i7 (i hear 4ghz is pretty easy with air), but will leave it stock and with the stock fan/cooler to begin with.
[editline]2nd December 2010[/editline]
1600mhz ram or 2000mhz ram?
My OC goal would be 4.0ghz if that helps
http://ple.com.au/?p=snapshot&inventory_id=1094
That's what I have listed isn't it? Or are you talking about what Jaehead was saying?
I think you changed it, never mind.
Should I get this ram:
http://ple.com.au/?p=snapshot&inventory_id=1131
which has this cas: 7-7-7-20
for $235
or
http://ple.com.au/?p=snapshot&inventory_id=1358
which has cas: 9-9-9-28
for $115
How much of a difference are we talking here?
[editline]2nd December 2010[/editline]
And which graphics card?
http://ple.com.au/?p=snapshot&inventory_id=1557
EVGA GTX460 SC EE 763M/3800M 1GB/DVI/HDMI#
$269
vs
http://www.netplus.com.au/product/VD5/VDGIGTX460-E1/Graphics-Card/Gigabyte-GTX460-1Gb-OC-DDR5-256bit-PCI-E-GeForce-GF-Nvidia-GV-N460OC-1GI-Overclocked
Gigabyte GTX460 1Gb OC DDR5
$218
I'd go for the GEIL 6GB KIT DDR3 VALUE PLUS C9 1600MHz, but the other ram has a way better heat spreading system.
As for the graphic cards I'd go for the gigabyte version of the GTX 460, it looks a lot more reliable and is less likely to overheat than the EVGA card.
Actually, idle garbage collection works in RAID, you just have to have your drives idle for an hour per week or so, but i agree, one better drive is a better idea.
Idle Garbage Collection is nowhere near as good as TRIM.

No it isn't, it doesn't work.

Why? What performance benefits would he see from a 1366, besides triple channel RAM? It's almost the same price to get 8gb double channel as to get 6gb triple.
Except I want an i7 950...
Why? An 870 is pretty much the exact same, just clocked a tiny bit slower, which you can easily make up on the stock cooler.
Why? An 870 is pretty much the exact same, just clocked a tiny bit slower, which you can easily make up on the stock cooler.
You'd be surprised at the amount of people who don't want to overclock, not to mention they don't know how too.
Why? An 870 is pretty much the exact same, just clocked a tiny bit slower, which you can easily make up on the stock cooler.
Meh, the 950 is about 10-15 dollars more (I found a 950 for $325) than the 870, and I get triple channel RAM and I also have a feeling that the 950 can be OC'd higher..?
Meh, the 950 is about 10-15 dollars more (I found a 950 for $325) than the 870, and I get triple channel RAM and I also have a feeling that the 950 can be OC'd higher..?
I think you can overclock it to 3.8GHz, but you might want to get more than a stock cooler.
Can anyone recommend a good case?
I was going to go with the antec 300 at first, but then according to this thread the case is a little tight
So then I decided on an antec 900, but it's more than double the price (60 vs 125) so I'm not really sure it's worth it.
Here are my case criteria,
I dont: -Care what it looks like (don't even really like the look of the 900 Tbh)
-Care if it has a window etc
I do care about: -Good cooling
-enough space for SLI comfortably?
-Noise reduction?
Have you tried the Antec Nine Hundred Two?
Why are you getting such a pricey GTX 460? Get one that's ~$200.
