So just over a year ago I bought some new stuff from overclockers.co.uk (yes, ok), a motherboard bundle (mobo + ram + cpu). It's been fine so far but in the last 3 days I've been encountering problems that I think were caused by the power supply failing.
Before today, on startup, the computer would fail startup a couple of times then work a few tries later (everything was fine once booted). Now, the POST screen never shows (nothing does) and the PC stays on for about 10 seconds then loses all power, waits 3 seconds, and starts the whole thing again.
In the very rare case that the screen displays anything, I see 'Scanning BIOS Image in Hard Drive' which I assume is the restore function looking for a saved bios image (even though no drives are plugged in and there is no saved image).
I suspect the PSU is the problem because the power issues started before the bios messed up.
I have tried:
-cmos reset, no luck.
-replacing the PSU; I have a 520w supply but that only has one graphics card adapter (need 2 otherwise I see an error screen telling me there's not enough power for it)
-downloaded the latest BIOS update from the gigabyte site here, burnt it to a CD and tried to get it to boot from that but nothing different happens.
I never tried to flash the bios or anything :saddowns:
I can get a new PSU on monday but even if that works I'll still be stuck with a broken bios and no way to restore it. The motherboard boasts a double bios system where a backup steps in to overwrite the primary if it's corrupted, but I haven't seen any evidence of that happening.
Stats:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3
Processor: Intel E6500 dual-core @ 3.2ghz
Memory: Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2
Hard Drive: 1TB & 320GB SATA drives (unplugged until this is sorted out)
Video Card: ATI radeon HD 4870 (1gb)
Power Supply: 600w OCZ Technology
The only card on the motherboard is the graphics card, I took a wifi and TV card out when this started happening.
You can't flash a BIOS update from CD, you'll need to put it on a USB drive and flash using that using Q-FLASH (one of the boot options on the splash screen, or you can get to it through BIOS setup). If it's still fucking up, it's RMA time. Be prepared to send back your motherboard, CPU, and RAM (not the cooler)

Booting never got that far - there was no splash/POST screen, just a long delay and sometimes a 'scanning hard disk' message. However:
Update!
I found a 4-pin to 6-pin power converter lying around in a box, reinstalled the 520w supply and now everything works fine. I'm still not sure what the BIOS business was though :raise:

Oh wow, really? 5 minutes in everything was going fine (OS loaded, etc). Then bam, black screen. Rebooted and it turned itself off after 20 seconds. Reset the cmos and now it's looking for a bios image on the hard drive again...
Well by the looks at all of that and that 4-6 pin adapter I would say try a different video card.
Bump: Did you get this fixed? I'm curious to see how you solved yours.
