Imagine being locked out of your house because a firmware update bricked your lock.

IoT is the official term used in the industry i believe. at least that's what TI and Cisco calls it.

IoT is just the term used to describe the platform of many small, largely independent smart devices interconnecting and autonomously managing themselves and each other (hence an "internetworking" of "things").
They're still smart devices, but with the added possibility of growing a whole platform of interconnected devices it makes up a part of your local IoT. In a perfect world the IoT is a really, really good idea. But in the real world (full of disappointment and morons); software doesn't get tested properly, security is left lacking thanks to management/ idiot developers not thinking about it, and users will fuck it up with insecure networks anyway.

Its their broad term for Smart-Whatever appliances.
What's the benefit of an internet connected lock on your front door? Seems unnecessary.

Biggest argument for these would be this, could be useful in cases with kids that don't have a key or something so you can just pop it open from wherever you are.
Why would you have a physical lock on a real door connected to the internet

Convenience. Just last weekend I had to plant my apartment key somewhere for my friends to pick up because I was not at home. Had I been able to unlock it remotely, or provide my mate with a digital key, things would've been easier.
Still, the very idea of remotely updating a lock software, especially if its in the locked state, is beyond stupid.
Trust me this situation sucks, I was locked out the other day because I forgot to take a verification can to work with me
