So I've been running Wireshark a bit lately, and somewhere on their Wiki/site, there was something specifically saying that a high frequency of ARP packets may be a sign that you're infected with some sort of malware. I can't find the link right now, but I'm certain that's exactly what it said. I get a lot of ARP requests, usually asking for the MAC of the same IP address over and over. Basically, "Who has 192.168.1.109? Tell 192.168.1.100" over and over and over.
Does anyone with serious networking experience know if this is a common thing, or do you think it could be malware-related?
I have a small home network with a standard Linksys wireless router. 1 desktop, 2-3 laptops. nForce motherboard, so integrated Nvidia NIC.
why not just scan with antivirus and ad-aware stuff to see if your computers actually have malware.
do it overnight so people aren't inconvenienced. if nothing comes up then its probably just the NIC
It is probably your Windows PCs doing it. I think I remember someone saying a while back that Windows PCs are rather excessive with the ARPing.
It shouldn't be a problem.
Windows by design is very chatty over the network. It keeps sending out those ARP requests because something is likely mis-configured and needs to contact that IP for some reason.
Don't worry about it. Its normal.
that is normal, it causes alittle more traffic on the network but speeds up things as you don't need to ask for a mac address when you need to transfer shit
By default, a Linksys Wireless router DHCP hands out IP addresses starting at 192.168.1.100 and working it's way up. You are at 192.168.1.109, you have 4 computers... let it sink in a bit...
