He's not simply talking about people making illegal purchases with cryptocurrencies. He's talking about the cryptocurrency-specific anonymity making it much more difficult for criminals to be held accountable for their actions compared to regular currency. The whataboutism seems misplaced here IMO. He was asked for his opinion on crypto, and he gave his opinion on crypto-specific characteristics (anonymity and speculative waves). He doesn't need to weigh these risk factors against those of regular currency, that wasn't part of the question.
Bill Gates is a solid guy. From his massive donations to his boots-on-thr-ground activism, he's probably one of the most altruistic folks I know of. And he can jump over an office chair with a slight running start so
