That's too much IMO. This equates to approx. $850 CAD.
the price isn't entirely unreasonable the true mistake was setting up unrealistic expectations in the market, by promising a first-quarter release (with current sales already estimated to ship in june) and promising that it would be affordable, in the "300-500 ballpark"
699 euro excluding shipment
yeah and the price not even covering US shipping what a joke
They're gonna have to pump out a gen 2 for a lower cost.
Higher than expected (most were guessing $500 not $600). TotalBiscuit puts it well though, here's his opinion:
Well, the Oculus is up for preorder and some people are surprised by the $600 pricetag. I'm not exactly sure where people got the impression that the first piece of true consumer-ready VR was actually going to be cheap tech. We are talking about the cutting edge of what is possible with gaming right now, a device that has multiple high resolution, high framerate displays, minaturised and built right into it, advanced head tracking technology and god knows what else. We are also talking about a device that frankly is not, initially, going to run well on the PC hardware that the mass market owns. If you want to game on this thing, you're going to need a pretty beastly PC. The PC requirements were recently revealed and they are a GTX 970/ AMD 290, along with an upper end i5 processor or equivalent. That is not the average PC, and why would it be? This thing renders at 2160x1200, that's 233 million pixels. 1080p is 207 million. Not only that, but VR tech is designed to run at high framerates in order to reduce motion sickness and blur. According to the FAQ on the site, the two modes it supports at 75 and 90fps. Can your computer run most demanding modern games at 1080p, 90fps? If so congratulations, you are on the enthusiast level and you are the target audience for early adoption of the Rift. If you can't well, before spending $600 on a Rift, maybe think about spending that $600 on upgrades for your PC instead. Eventually, VR will be mass market tech, I dont have any doubt of that. It's not a gimmick, I've used it, this is not the same as 3d, its tech that at least to me, enhances existing games and opens up possibilities for new genres. For some games, this is a monitor replacement, because I think those games will just look and play better in VR than they will on a standard screen. Speaking of monitors, the monitor I use cost $700. Granted, it's high end, 27 inchs at 2560x1440 144hz native resolution, with gsync, but thats not much more expensive than a Rift. The Rift is for all intents and purposes, a high end display. You expect to pay that much for a high end display. Then again, we have people that wouldn't blink at $2000+ for their bigscreen TV, saying Rift is too pricey. Ok then...

That's too much IMO. Is this $599 excluding Tax & Importing fees? If so that's going to be damn expensive for anyone outside the US

I think they should've just not made any price point speculations until this reveal. A lot of people, including myself, got the wrong idea.

It would be nice to get a basic version without the high quality headphones and controller, those of which I already have.
It would be nice to get a basic version without the high quality headphones and controller, those of which I already have.
both of which are added at virtually no cost to oculus. They wanted to make sure absolutely nobody skimps out on those, which are PRETTY fundamental to a decent VR experience. Palmer said if you don't need it, feel free to sell the controller off for a little cash back
Wait a few years, one or two at least. By then not only will it be more refined (gen1 oculus, I guarantee, will have A LOT of problems) but it'll also be more mainstream, cost less, and there'll be competitive options. Right now there is no competition on the market. The Vive isn't out yet, and who knows how much that'll cost. If it ends up being a better product for less, the Rift is going down as well. Anyone who is buying one now is wasting their money IMO. It's the same type of people who got to jump on the brand new thing right away. Get a nice 980ti with that money and wait a little bit. Patience will prove me right.
Hopefully the vive is...who am I kidding, VR in 2016 isn't for me. Maybe in 2020. And you fucking know there are going to be people with shitty PCs buying this and being mad that it runs like shit.

And you can buy an "Rift Ready" PC from them, as well as "Rift Ready" certified PCs from 3rd party vendors. They are trying pretty hard to make sure nobody has a bad experience, hence the audio and controller as well.
Well, the Oculus is up for preorder and some people are surprised by the $600 pricetag. I'm not exactly sure where people got the impression that the first piece of true consumer-ready VR was actually going to be cheap tech.
I knew it wasn't cheap tech, but they did mention something in the lines like it wouldn't be much more expensive than the devkits, and how the acquistion by facebook would keep the price low. Also I remember how people said oculus is going for the mass market with cheaper product, while vive is going to be a premium product for enthusiasts, plus it comes with those custom controllers. That thng will probably be 100$ more expensive.
You're forgetting how stupid people can be. "b-but it's a brand new macbook! It should work!"
I think this is a fair thing to keep in mind at all times. I've had people tell me their macbook was "almost as powerful as a super computer" while apple users are in the spotlight here v:v:v [editline]6th January 2016[/editline]
I knew it wasn't cheap tech, but they did mention something in the lines like it wouldn't be much more expensive than the devkits, and how the acquistion by facebook would keep the price low. get fucked, for this fucking amount of money include some magic chip that also renders everything at 90 fps on any pc it costs 1.5x more than my WHOLE current pc with a 760 and that's forgetting that I also need a better GPU for it to have acceptable FPS
699 euro excluding shipment
It comes down to 900€ if you want it delivered to Germany.

What performance do you get out of the bugger, and what pricepoint would be acceptable if your standard for the computer is that price Please clarify if you're comparing the title price or you've seen the VAT+shipping to Europe, and run the 3DMark fire strike benchmark for us
Also a thing to note is that at this price, Oculus is apparently not actually making any money from selling the hardware. All the parts and all the stuff that's in the actual Rift is just that expensive.

I was like "yeah, I can afford that if I save money for some months" and now it's $600 (45000 rub, new rate) [sp]bottom line is, take back your fucking crimea and give the old exchange rate back, I (well, both me and my wallet) still can't get used to the fact that imported products (aka practically everything except for food) fucking doubled in price[/sp]
