So I just installed Windows 7 x64, upgrading from Vista Ultimate x86. I have 4 gigs of ram in my machine, and I have a Core 2 Duo e6320. Yet, it still says I only have 3 gigs usable, what's the problem?
Did you do a clean install?
Yes, it was a complete reformat.
Sounds like you didn't get a 64bit version. Post a screenshot of that window.
Do you have a on-board gfx?
Are you positive it is 64 bit?
Are you sure your RAM is seated properly, and are you sure you downloaded the right ISO?
Check your BIOS for a memory remapping feature. It's called PCI Memory rempa in my BIOS I think. Turn that on.
Also check msconfig (get to it by opening run then typing msconfig) under the boot tab click advanced and make sure memory isn't ticked with anything in it.

Check the advanced tab of the boot config and make sure it doesn't have a max RAM set in msconfig.
what card do you have and mobo
He's got an 8800GT and an Abit IL9 Pro.
Wow Prisma, how did you remember that.

I have no onboard video. I checked my MSConfig, RAM limiting is not checked. I also checked my bios, I found nothing to do with memory remapping features. And my ram is in fact totally seated.
Anybody? Shameless bump?
You could try pulling out the RAM sticks and then putting them all back in, and see if that works. It's worth a shot.
http://www.motherboards.org/reviews/motherboards/1680_2.html Maximum Memory 4GB Your motherboard is allocating BIOS memory first (apparently 38MB), then allocating Video Memory (512MB), leaving you with the remainder as RAM. Time to upgrade your board.
