First of all, I'm from Denmark, as you'll know from the ".dk" website links.
My dad wanted to get a new computer since he swears over the current one he's got. He was very skeptical when I first built my own PC, but after he saw how well it ran over all the prebuilts that he had for twice the price, he told me to build one on his next monthly pay.
I gathered these parts together for a little under the budget my mom set (Yes, dad got mom restricted). Already got a graphics card, DVD burner and a case for it, so that's not to worry about.
But is all this compatible? Anything I should know? I heard that 1.65 volt ram would fry the i7 processor, but a friend told me that his computer simply under-clocked the ram to 1.5 volt.

Total price: 5219 DKK ~ $996.18 U.S.D
It's going to be running Windows 7 RC1 until the actual release. All of this will be bought on Friday, so it's not one of those "I'll get this in two years" builds.
Oh, and yes I do feel a little bad for having my dad get a better computer than me.. But I'll let that go :v:.
What graphics card do you have for it?
Video rendering is now starting to be moved onto graphics cards with CUDA instead of the CPU.
That motherboard doesn't support triple channel RAM.

Only encoding can get sped up. Rendering from Vegas and stuff is still 100% CPU.
And I think the Adobe CS4 can only benefit from the shop cards like the ATI Firestorm and Nvidia Quadro cards.
high end VIDEO EDITING pc ?!!?!
hell just get a cheap laptop

He got that, and he's pissed at it for it's slow speeds :v:.

Nvidia 9800GTX (not the + version). Old, but yet he's not going to have any game on it at all. Maybe some solitaire.

Isn't that triple channel ram? That's mostly what I'm unsure of. (source of that: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2989&ProductName=GA-EX58-UD3R])
I'd say in this situation, spend $1200 and get a Macbook Pro.
There is a reason they are favourites in the media industry, and it's not just their snazzy looks.

Because Apple gives it to them for free for advertising?
I'm prolly shooting blanks here, but for video editing, shouldn't he just need a fast HDD/CPU/RAM?

they can use gpu acceleration

hurr if I buy a mac it instantly makes me good at everything to do with media

Which is exactly what I choose? I7-920, great video encoding benchmarks. The motherboard was fine too, as I read a review on bit-tech.. And I heard that RAM doesn't really matter as long as it's 1066 and above.
The Graphics card is really just.. Well, one of the ones in my SLI setup. I'm offering it for him so I can sell the other of them later and then buy a newer card in the future (Late this year or so).
But I'm still concerned about the RAM and the motherboard since he said the motherboard won't support triple channel.
And for gods sake, please don't turn this into a PC vs. MAC fight.
And yes, I told him that he'd need a graphics card to have GPU acceleration in some programs. Which he then said was okay. Else he'd have told me to put in some HD4350 or a 9400gt. Guess it's better to utilize my older 9800gtx for that.

Socket AM3 board.
I didn't check yours out, just look for AM3.
if your dad is a casual media doer then get a mac
if he knows what he is doing just get a 955+790GX+ ddr3 1333 CAS 6 ram

Are you serious?
I hope you're trolling.
AM3 is for newer AMD processors, it has nothing to do with the RAM.
The motherboard says it supports DDR3 right?
that should work unless there's something I'm overlooking.

955 as in AMD? I've seen the benchmarks on the i7-920 be a lot faster in video editing as the only real win. But John, could you tell me if the build I made up in the OP would work and if I had to do anything with the RAM and motherboard?

Exactly! Thanks, well I hope for the best then. Oh and for why it can't be a Mac, it's because he's going to use some of the older parts while still using programs incompatible with the mac platform. That, and he's really hyped about windows 7 for some reason.
get some ram that has some lower CAS
DDR3 1066 CAS 5 > DDR3 1600 CAS 9
get some ram that has some lower CAS

Sounds good, but where can I see what "CAS" whatever that is, the RAM is? I'd be happy if you found something around the same price on www.shg.dk, www.komplett.dk or www.getmore.dk (danish, but since this is hardware it should be pretty much equal to the english names).
Wait, my bad, that board does support triple channel. It's got 4 DIMM's so I assumed it was 2 + 2, rather than 3 + 1.

Ah, thanks man. I'm set to go then. 3+1 does seem rather stupid, but as long as the RAM works.
Thread request is fulfilled and doesn't need further posts, unless John Edwards would explain the CAS thing :v:.
lower CAS the better
CAs is kinda like how long it takes data to move in and out of the chip the Mhz is how fast the ram can read the data
So say it has 1mb file assume 9 CAs takes 1 second to send a 1mb through then a CAs 5 would take like .6 seconds (depending on the clock) the cas will usually make up for the clock
CAs how fast data can move in and out
Mhz how fast the data on the chip can be read
John, does low CAS, low frequency RAM give you a hardon?

Damn, nice. Mine is 4-4-4-12, bumped to 4-5-5-12, but I've clocked it to 1080 MHz.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146565 Shit's beast when it works, but I've heard about people having tons of issues with that RAM.
yeah I had 2 of those they caught on fire
