First Time Gaming Build £1000 Budget - Where do I start?

FP, My situation is dire as I am on a barely functioning PC and I have come to you for assistance.
I'm going to scratch build a gaming rig for myself, even though I realise it'll quickly become obsolete.

Budget:
My budget is £1000, this is not total, and not VAT inclusive by any means. I don't plan on buying this all in one go as I'm paid monthly and have other expenditures such as rent to account for first. I think my utmost cap would be around £1500.
Games:

I'm a gamer, but I do a bit of modding on the side and use programs such as Adobe Photoshop. Mostly I'd like to run games such as TF2, Portal 2, Source Engine games, as well as more recent games such as StarCraft 2. I don't need the best graphics in the world, but I do want them to run smoothly. I was raised in the 90's, I have no need for fancy AA.
Disk Space:

As I play games and mod I use large amounts of space, my current Steam folder is 75GB. (Not the biggest I'll admit, but out of a 300GB SATA it takes a fair chunk)
I would prefer SATA drives, however IDE drives are also fine in my book. I should not need more than 2TB Max anyway, but if you think I can afford it, you're welcome to give me more. I will be partitioning.
Monitor/Sound System/HIDS:

I have a SONY LCD monitor, but the max resolution is 1024x768. I'm not happy with this and would be interested in getting a newer monitor, preferably one that is also TV compatible.
Native resolution is 1024x768
I have a surround sound system so speakers are not required.
I am ably equipped to locate myself a new mouse and keyboard if need be.

I have an array of disk drives, hard drives and cables lying around, but after rebuilding this PC and finding so many damaged parts I no longer trust anything I have.
I am currently using a NVIDIA 7800GS which is salvagable as a stop-gap if need be.
I have a valid copy of Windows XP SP2.

I plan to build this over the course of 2-3 months, depending on wages, expenses and such. So I'll be buying parts individually. A new OS will be required also.
TL;DR - Gaming PC for a Modder/Mapper & Misc use.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask, if I have missed anything I apologise. Can you guys help me get my gaming back on track?
Don't buy parts individually, it's a dumb idea and new hardware may be released along with prices dropping. Just save up the amount and buy it all at once
I'll take that into consideration.
yeh i have to agree, buying months down the line isnt a very good idea, buying it all bulk now will also sometimes save you money too.
