The most I usually only get at max is about 5000, I'm constantly buying ammo because I worry ill run out of it at the worst time possible.
I have 9685 caps, feels good man.
22k at most, I usually have about 15k at any one time though.

I also sell all my crap.

Get a melee weapon and use it more than guns, you soon find yourself saving alot of ammo.
I only ever use a gun in situations where I am screwed otherwise. I got a balistics fist from cesar, with full CND (Well not cesar himself, I got a few off of the gaurds and mashed them together)
It 1 hit kills nearly all of the time.

along with that I have like $50,000 worth of shit in my house.
Um like couple hundred thousand. It's obscenely easy to get caps if you have a barter skill of 100 with a basically maxed character, and a scrounger/hoarder/miser personality to go with it. Not to mention 60+ hours put into the game without even finishing Broken Steel..

in new vegas something like a million. set your luck to 10 at the beginning of the game it really helps if you buy a lot of shit
