Trading came before crafting? I swear thats not what I remember.
This is a nice read. I like looking at the development of tf2.

Indeed. It sure as hell didn't appear when hats were first released, since I know people made trade agreements in advance and fulfill them when trading would actually come out. There was at least one wave of different hats in between, maybe even more.
The WAR update was in 2009? I started playing in mid 2009 and I sure as hell remember the WAR update being later than that..
God, I remember those days. I wish someone came up with a mod that allowed me to revive the old TF2 experience on a server. Only the original weapons, no hats, only the six first maps...

PS3 and Xbox Orange Box has as vanilla tf2 as you can get.

doesnt it have tons of known glitches and exploits that were never fixed, too?
Nice read.
Though I'd dare say cosmetic DLC/promotions and holiday-themed game events were pretty commonplace in multiplayer games even before TF2 did it.

I think a lot of the first ones were fixed on the PS3 one, but the Xbox one is untouched.

Other way round, PS3 was never patched iirc, whereas Xbox recieved a few.

That's what I originally thought, actually. But then I remembered Valve had it in with PS3 with the Steam integration and all, so I was like "wait maybe it's the other way around."
I'm not even remotely surprised I was wrong.
I still remember playing the pre order TF2 beta. It was bugged as fuck and I could only play 30 minutes at a time or something and man it was awesome.
Man, the early character models were creepy looking.
I really love how Valve keeps the pages for updates up, it's fun to go back after some years to see what the game considered "new" back then. http://steamgames.com/tf2/heavy/
It also reminds me how many times the Backburner has been rebalanced :v:. http://steamgames.com/tf2/pyro/
this is hilariously wrong.

I think they were shifting some details around for the sake of flow.

I remember watching this and getting super hyped
Aww, it missed out everything before teh modern TF2, such as brotherhood in arms and all the other different versions.
this is a pretty shit researched article. there's a bit of mistakes

You can map commands like noclip to your controller IIRC.

Someone made a mod like that, if you want i can upload it to DB or something.
glad they reworked the spy to not look like a nazi

They patched that out of the 360 version, I believe. Valve gave that version a pretty decent farewell patch, but it still has a lot of exploits left in the maps.
You can still do it in the PS3 version. It's because the servers still have sv_cheats 1 turned on. EA runs those servers. It's their responsibility to update the PS3 version, but they don't give a damn. I'm more surprised they haven't shut down the servers yet, especially since it's EA. Though I do recall there being far less available servers than usual last time I played, so maybe they did shut down most of them.
Last time I popped in the PS3 version and hopped into a 2fort server, it was a complete mess. There were Spies hanging out in the spawns, endlessly backstabbing people. Demomen waited outside the spawn doors to blow escapees to bits with sticky spam. And if you managed to slip out and get to the intel, that's too bad as well; the intel had been ent_remove'd so the game couldn't be won. :suicide:

Right, because only Nazis have armbands.
Adding some stuff like hats and new maps to the console versions would bring more and more people to the game imo

Things like new items (and thus more concurrent models loaded into the game) can't be added because they've already used up their console memory allowance on the base game, at least according to Valve. New maps would be a possibility, but another problem Valve highlighted was Microsoft's unwillingness to let them do free patches (which they later conceded to with L4D/L4D2).
At this stage, though, the game is simply too old to go back and update; too much work would have to be put into optimizing everything for consoles. They'd be better off remaking the whole game for next-gen consoles if anything.
The first haloween event is always really nostalgic for me. I remember how excited I was that they were doing something so new for a FPS
