Hello.
This is a strange and extremely irritating problem I've come across just yesterday. I've spent hours and hours trying to figure out the issue with all of my ability and knowledge, but I still can't figure out what's going on. Basically, pretty much everything will stop working (including the desktop and taskbar and all applications and windows I have up) and freeze (not respond) for around 5 minutes or so and then will unfreeze. This happens way too often and is very annoying. I'd provide specs but right now I'm on my laptop trying to figure things out. It runs on Windows 7 64-bit. It's getting to the point where I can't stand using the PC anymore. Here's what I've tried so far:
- Registry cleanup and fixed issues with CCleaner
- System Restore
- Updating video drivers (except it didn't need updating)
- The repair sequence during startup.
- Scanning for Malware and Viruses, both my programs not coming up with anything after a full scan.
- Defragmentation
Thanks for your guys' help!
Well unless it is a hardware issue, a fresh install of the OS will probably be the fastest solution. Might be something that is corrupt or something along those lines.
Is there no other way? I appear to have lost my Windows 7 CD and I've been turning the house upside-down to try and find it.
Did some more troubleshooting and this problem did not happen for a while until I opened about three tabs in Firefox. Then the whole computer hangs up again. Maybe it happens when I'm putting my computer to work more than usual?
Reinstalling the OS will probably not solve the problem. It sounds like you have a failing hard drive. Windows doesn't handle a malfunctioning hard drive well so it simply freezes, waiting for the hard drive to respond.
Can you do a chkdsk or use HDTune to check the condition of your hard drives?

Do you wish for me to do a simple check or actually attempt to fix the bad sectors and system errors as well? I heard that doing this puts the hard drive in really hard work and has the potential to further damage it.
EDIT: I just did a check and apparently no problems were found...
I just tried using HDTune and it found some damaged blocks. I'm thinking I should run the chkdsk fixing process anyway then? I'll probably have to back everything up before then though...
You can't fix damaged sectors/blocks. You should look into buying a new hard drive.
Would I have to buy a new one no matter how many damaged blocks there are? Right now it's finding only 0.6% of damaged blocks out of everything...It's still in progress.
I recommend doing so, if "damaged blocks" is what i think it is; the drive could quickly be headed toward being 100% dysfunctional.
