Hello all, hoping this is the right place to ask for help, but im having a OS-related issue.
A while back my laptop's Operating system was badly damaged by some viruses/trojans which a friend had on his flash drive.
The laptop was a dell computer, but they did not send me a re-installation disc with my laptop for some reason (and i got this laptop a while back, since the warranty is expired they refuse to send me a disc). So i went to school and got a re-installation disc of the same Operating system (Windows XP media center) from a teacher.
When i pop it in to "upgrade" the installation, it asks for my serial code. I typed in the code which was issued for my laptops OS Via the sticker on the bottom, but it says it isnt a valid code. I double checked to make sure i had the right code, which i did, and still nothing. It is the exact type of OS that was placed on my laptop but it refuses the serial code. Does anyone know why this would be happening or how i could fix it?
you can only use that code for the CD's dell they give you.
use the one that came with the CD your teacher gave you.
or get a new OEM disc

There was no code, its some sort of multi-edition repair disk (it has all of the XP editions).

well try not doing upgrade. do custom install. it will format the HDD
the upgrade is for going from an old os

I would if i could, but i dont have the cash to get XP and it probably cant handle vista.
If i cant work anything out i might try running linux on it, but i wanted to see if there was any other solution

Its going good so far, it hasnt asked for a serial yet. will update when i can
What dell computer do you have exactly?
If you have either a XPS, dimension or inspiron you can use the recovery partiton by pressing CTRL+F11 at POST (thats where the dell logo appears on screen) you might have to try it a few times to get it right.
If you can't make it work it might be availible from the boot menu (Its usually F12)
The reason dell didnt give you a XP CD is because your system has a recovery partition, too many people complained and they started delivering the systems with CD's again

Well i didn't notice that you formatted, the method mentioned above won't work if you deleted the recovery partition :)
