Because it was new at the time the colonists founded it and it just stuck, okay?
New York is named after someplace named York in England.

This.
Just like New Hampshire, or New Brunswick, or whatever.
It is named after the fifth "DUKE OF YORK" James Stuart, the second son of Charles I. The city and state of New York in what is now the United States of America were named for this particular Duke of York.
greets.

it also can be named after the city York in the english shire Yorkshire.
The Duke of York was the Landlord of Yorkshire - so its not clear if it was named after the Shire or after the Duke.

Dutch colonial Director-General Peter Minuit purchased the island of Manhattan from the Lenape in 1626 for a value of 60 guilders (about $1000 in 2006);[18] a legend, now disproved, says that Manhattan was purchased for $24 worth of glass beads.[19][20] In 1664, the English conquered the city and renamed it "New York" after the English Duke of York and Albany.
i rate myself as dumb... thx.

OK, so at first the dutch started a settlement called New Amsterdam, because they wanted it to be a city of their home, but a new one.
In 1667, the Dutch did not press their claims on New Netherland in the Treaty of Breda, in return for an exchange with the tiny Island of Run in North Maluku, rich in nutmegs and the guarantee for the factual possession of Suriname, that year captured by them. The New Amsterdam city was subsequently renamed New York, after the Duke of York.

Actually, no. Just get someone who's studying American history or actually remembers this shit.
Because it's newer than old York, in Yorkshire. Just like New Amserdam or New South Wales.
