Download it from the Steam website.
I think that hat is a really good incentive to get users to try linux (like me...), knowing that the TF2 community would shoot someone for a hat.

Did you use the DEB
If Steam kept expanding support for Linux and kept expanding the library of solidly supported linux titles I'd be tempted to build a small ITX Linux machine for my entertainment center.

Nah I was just trying to download from the software centre, usually free stuff doesn't require an account
