Dont tell me that rabbid shit is the reason this is happening
Rabbids isn't mentioned once in the article. This is, of course, disregarding that Mario & Rabbids is really damn fun.
This "XCOM genre" is in an interesting place at the moment, where its big enough to have multiple contenders at both AAA and indie levels, but small enough that everyone involved is cheering each other on.
We’re in this awesome space where there’s a lot of blue ocean and we can all be positive with each other as designers ... All of us are lifting each other up - if the games are good, it’s not going to hurt any of us. It’s cool for me to see that Julian is still making games, and maybe because of our XCOM he gets to come back and make a game like Phoenix Point.
Mario + Rabbids is the [del]Dark Souls[/del] XCOM of Nintendo games.
And I am totally okay with this becoming a genre. Although we need a good solid name for it, like maybe TSRPG only not too redundant. XCOM-like would probably be a bit too lazy a name for it, though. A bit too similar to Doom clone for my liking.
Turn based tactics games gave been a genre for over 20 years. It's just that the systems of the new XCOM games have been popular in a couple of new entries in the genre.
