So yes, it works very well. [editline]12:08AM[/editline] Linux will run on hardware way less powerful than an Atom. The Atom is about the sane limit for XP. Sure you can run XP on some low power machines, but it's not going to be something you enjoy using.
Atom is just an x86. Nothing special there.
So far on my eee (1000 so it has the atom) I've have: Mandriva, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Arch, Xandros and XP. XP worked pretty well until it killed itself. Mandriva was good but pretty slow. Ubuntu was slightly better, xbuntu was a lot better and what I'm on now. Arch was great.....until I broke it. This is all with the N270, the single core one with hyperthreading. If you get the dual core version I'm sure it'll run any distribution. Try to stay away from KDE though, use GNOME, xfce or lxde.
I've got Eebuntu installed on my Eee 1000 and it runs great. I don't see why Linux wouldn't work on an atom.
Well as they SELL netbooks with the atom in them with linux i think they would work :downs:

You at least need a window manager, though.
Of course you do.
X is good enough.
Has anyone tried this yet? ive been wanting to build a Linux only box for some time now and i just noticed the Intel Atom setups can be built for rediculously cheap..
You get a box for not knowing what the x86 architecture is.
X is good enough.
X isn't a desktop manager, it's a Windows System (NOTE: System, not manager). It's not "managing" the way windows looks, the way desktops looks or anything. That's what DE's and WM's does.
Oops, thinking of something else :downs:
Openbawx, pekwm, or awesome (Yes I must recommend these to everyone).
Openbawx, pekwm, or awesome (Yes I must recommend these to everyone).
what??
My netbook has an Atom, and it runs fine.
You get a box for not knowing what the x86 architecture is.
...You rated me dumb because i posted a question about how Linux ran on an Atom? i know what x86 is, and you are an ass.
If you use Linux on an Intel Atom based netbook, try out Moblin. It should be an interesting experience.

I've run Linux on computers with much less powerful processors than the Atom. I've got a server with a Pentium III running Debian, a computer that I never use with a 486 running DSL, and a Pentium IV running Fedora.

My dedi uses an Atom and everything runs perfectly. It IS a server though, so I'm not sure how an Atom would do on a desktop system. I'm guessing it would do OK.
