An interesting study in 'okay, a little too crazy'. Like really, I could just not enjoy this game: the mechanics were a mismatch because it was literally just SR3's mechanics but with super powers. It was a weird game, one you wont necessarily enjoy even if you enjoyed 2 and 3 .
A flawed but very fun game. I'd still recommend it.
I've played through this game 3 times with different people. Was fun every time.
I quite enjoyed it. Of course I really liked the other SR games and I like Crackdown and this is pretty much a combo of the two.
I didn't enjoy it as much as I did 2 and 3, but it's still a fun game to play with a friend. Alone I just got bored because the side activities aren't all that top notch except for the classics like Insurance Fraud.
For 11 euro you can get all Saints Row games (except for SR 1). Worth it IMO.
just great, i tried launching this game, it's not even moving after the logos
Ehh. SR3 and 4 did this thing where all the "fun" you could have was designated by side activities that aren't even that fun anyway. There is an amazing lack of free roam shit you can do for a game that prides itself on being a sandbox.
most of my problems with saints row summed up in three words: "steelport fucking sucked"
I liked 3 and really like 4, but I agree with this so hard.
most of my problems with saints row summed up in three words: "steelport fucking sucked"
Yeah, I got in to Saint's Row 3 and I drove around, and I was like "Oh, ok, there's a Planet Saints. What's the next clothing store over there? Oh, it's a Planet Saints. How ab-Planet Saints." No Sloppy Seconds, no On the Rag, no Branded, no Impressions, and only a couple of the unique stores survived but just got put out in the open which made it less cool to find them, and the rest is just fucking planet saints over and over and over and over. All that cool shit made Stilwater great, on top of the fact that it was just better designed and more unique. In SR3, I often don't know what island I'm even on or where I am in the city. The series just gets so seemingly budget as it goes on. They stripped out a ton of the customization in Saint's Row 3 (which is fucking lame because for once people actually looked pretty decent so it would have been great to customize to SR2's insane level), they cut out a lot of the stores and just copy pasted Planet Saints everywhere, they didn't bother much with having a sense of progression (I don't have to work hard to get a suit anymore, in fact I could buy every clothing item in Saint's Row: The Third and I haven't even gotten 50 percent through), there didn't seem to be as many cutscenes, they disguised activities as story missions (and having to do like 12 or so of these fucking activities so they'd let me do actual plot missions severely wore down my patience), and I noticed they also seemed to skimp out on some cutscenes by just having sounds over the loading screen. Saint's Row 4 from what I've seen looked extremely skimpy as a game, even more budget, with the re-using of Steelport, not as many cutscenes, and superpowers that sort of just break everything. It's still a good game and all that, but they just can't compare to Saint's Row 2. I don't know, if it had stayed grounded in reality and they didn't let Adult Swim get their hands all over it with all this Genki shit, I think it would have been better off. I haven't gotten to SR4 yet but from what I've heard it sounds like they've written themselves in to a corner trying to go bigger and wackier, and I sincerely wonder if they'll be able to get out of that corner if there is another game.
After the release of Saints Row 4 in the spring of 2013, the developers announced a new game in the series – an independent addition called Saints Row: Gat out of Hell, and only after that the fans can expect to see Saints Row 5, the release date of which has not been announced yet. According to some sources, the storyline of the fifth part will again have a futuristic setting and will be based on time travel. According to some other rumors, the developers want to get back to the beginning and create something similar to Saints Row 2, only of a higher quality.
if this is true it sounds like they're pulling a major reset button Anyway, I'm undoubtedly a little bitter. Buy that shit anyway, it's funny and it's still enjoyable even through some of the many questionable things.
Steelport was horrible the games would be so much better without it
Saints Row IV's only fun mechanic are the super powers. Besides that the game was very mediocre but i still finished it. Messing around in the game with a friend also has its limits as we got bored after 2 hours.
As someone who only played Saint's Row 3 and 4, what made steelport so bad? [editline]13th September 2015[/editline]
Saints Row IV's only fun mechanic are the super powers. Besides that the game was very mediocre but i still finished it. And the enemies were too strong/complex for vehicles. The 3rd just felt better, overall, especially with the pacing. IV just feels like a really big DLC, which is honestly is.
As someone who only played Saint's Row 3 and 4, what made steelport so bad?
Basically, what made Stilwater memorable was that it was just bigger and better than Steelport. I don't know if Steelport is technically bigger than Stilwater, but it accomplished much more in every area. Each area is unique and memorable, even if it can be just set dressing at times. You've got a college campus, you've got the suburbs, you've got a more rough ghetto area of town, you've got some really fancy docks, a fucking pirate ship that's just there, tons of stuff to find and do. The people in each of these areas also dress like they're supposed to. You'll find stoners and college kids at college, you'll find pirates at a pirate ship, so on. The activities were also better too; you're not really forced to do them the same way Saint's Row 3 did it, they're completely separate from the storyline. Johnny Gat's never like "Hey before we take on the Ronin you gotta move prostitutes" or whatever. You might from time to time have to do some just to get your respect to a point where you can do the next mission, which sucks, but it's really easy to build up an allowance that will let you complete the entire story without having to do a single activity. But you'd want to anyway because they're also more fun. I just found driving a tiger and shit frustrating, where as old activities like Septic Avenger, where you drive a septic truck and spray liquid shit all over Stilwater, way more fun. And on top of that, if you beat all the levels of an activity, you'll get a kick ass reward, all these god items and huge abilities that would sooner be sold or just given to you in SR4. You earned the right to dive out of a helicopter and soar to the ground whenever you wanted, you weren't just given it. And on top of that, each activity location had an intro cutscene explaining why you were doing what you were doing, and a lot of them featured cool recurring characters from Saint's Row 1. There were more cutscenes in general I think. There are also easter eggs, the giant easter bunny being a very famous one. There were also a hell of a lot more shops. A huge amount more than Saint's Row 3 does, and each selling very distinct kinds of clothes. There were also hidden stores with unique items to find, Let's Pretend for instance was something you had to find, not something they just plopped on the map. There were Jewelry Stores, three kinds of car dealerships, two kinds of mechanics instead of one. it even had food and liquor stores, where you could buy food to heal you whenever you wanted, something I sorely missed in Saint's Row 3 when I was getting my ass kicked. Liquor stores, obviously, allowed you to get drunk or high whenever you wanted. And there were multiple varieties of each, as well. And there were more stores in general, not just in how many unique ones but in the number of them as well, way more. Cribs were more advanced, allowing you to buy a crib and upgrade it from a cheap shithole to a luxurious ass house, depending on what sets of furniture you could afford. And it was modular too. Like making it look swagged out and rich, but think the matching stripper pole is tasteless? Don't have to get the stripper pole, then, you can get something else. And there were a fuck ton of these cribs. The Saint's Headquarters too changed as you played the game. It goes from a dingy underground shithole, to [sp]being renovated, to being a full on club[/sp] as you progress in the story and the Saints get more powerful. And in all these cribs, you could replay each of your missions or watch cutscenes again. You could also choose what spray you wanted (not anything you want but you had a selection of sprays) to put your gang tag over those of other gangs for respect and to fuck with them. The whole world was just so detailed too, it made it so that when you did activities like mayhem and started blowing everything the fuck up, there was so much more to go on within your reach and it just felt so much more chaotic. It was just so big and detailed, and not only that, but you felt yourself progressing as a result. One thing I remember from when I first played it was doing missions, and activities, all in pursuit of getting enough money to buy a suit. Let alone all the cribs, and upgrades for them, and cars. Oh! Clothes too! There were probably two or three times as many clothes as were in Saint's Row 3. You had shirts, undershirts, jackets, hats aplenty, large amounts of piercings, shit, you could even customize your fucking socks. Change the color of everything too, and then add a logo. And then with every item of clothing, there were different ways to wear it! Tuck or untuck your shirt, keep your dress shirt unbuttoned, buttoned almost to the collar, or completely buttoned. Wear your hat at the jaunty angle of your choice. It was radical. There was also a day night cycle which as I understand it SR3 and SR4 lack, just having the time be randomized when you load a game or begin/end a mission. Even the city progresses, neighborhoods and stores change and you can see and feel those changes from the first game, especially in the actual Saint's Row itself, which goes from a dingy ghetto with an abandoned church in Saint's Row 1 to a [sp]sprawling massive gentrified urban area with futuristic skyscrapers and fountains and shit[/sp] in Saint's Row 2. There were also plenty of nods and references to the first game. One small detail you might not even notice is that you can still see artwork around the city from the gangs in Saint's Row 1, left there years later or sprayed over by the new gangs. I think that example in particular just goes to show how much care they put in to it. Honestly, all that together and more just ended up with Saint's Row 2 being way bigger, and with way more depth than Saint's Row 3 or 4. It's not even up for debate, it's just a fact. Go check on the wiki and you can see how much Saint's Row 2 had over Saint's Row 3. That's why Steelport sucks in comparison to Stilwater. Stilwater was bigger, better, more unique, and had so much shit in it and so much shit to do that bled in to everything else that it was just fantastic. Also, do yourself a service, and get Saint's Row 2! I've sucked its dick pretty hard here, but it's seriously marvelous and you do yourself a disservice by turning down a chance at it, even though it has it's own flaws.
Saint's Row 2 was the best 'game' out of them, but it has a terrible PC port. Saint's Row 3 was pretty fun. Saint's Row IV was huge amounts of fun.
Regarding the talks of Saints Row 5, wouldn't Volition need to get the rights to Red Faction first? I imagine that SR4 has put the franchise at a dead end, and i imagine it'd be hard to make a proper SR:TT sequel without having the rights to the universe where Saints Row used to take place before THQ shut down.
not as far as i can tell, gat out of hell had dane vogel as a character still
Well, Volition tried to make Ultor look as if they're much more than just a subtle Red Faction reference in Saints Row 2, having sunk in a lot of R&D money in mining vehicles that would eventually make their way to Mars
