I bought it, it said about 5k online at around 5:30 est. I'm categorized under the New York server region though (I guess, north-east US) so I don't know if that number is total players or just in the north-east.

Still found a game in about 15 seconds though so take that for what you will. At ~$30 though I think you'll get your money's worth.
I don't regret buying this last week for $45. It's a ton of fun

It uses data centers so you can choose what server you want to go to, I get put automatically in Belgium and there's (at peak time) 8-10k people.
