Well I need help, it's in the title. I have a fair idea about the computer I want. It is from ebuyer: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/247300. Here is my problem. It doesn't come with an operating system, monitor, mouse or keyboard. I have a mouse and will soon have the monitor. But I need you to suggest what keyboard (has to be rather cheap but durable) and which operating system. Yoiur opinions on the computer would be nice as well. Thanks for your help.

Budget for both keyboard and operating system is roughly £70.

That keyboard will do the job. As for your OS, if you are gaming your only choice is really Windows 7, however if you can still buy it, Windows XP will probably be cheaper, and I personally still think it's a good operating system. Windows 7 has a few nice features and will give you the most out of that PC's hardware. Also note you will need a 64bit operating system to make the most of your 8gb of ram, and the 64bit version of XP is not quite as well supported as 64bit Win7, but you shouldn't have any major problems.
Otherwise, your free option is Linux, of which pretty much all desktop distros are free. 2 examples: Arch is popular around here for advanced users and beginners with the patience to learn, and Ubuntu is an easy to use working-out-of-the-box distro.
That PC looks to me to be fairly decent value for a prebuilt, though there is no telling how good the case, PSU and motherboard really are.
Thanks, I think I can get 64-bit win7.

These as well as my logitech mouse and 17inch monitor are all I need then? Sorry, I'm a complete hardware-a-phobe!
hardware-a-phobe
you're afraid of modern technology?
the software4students W7 is an upgrade, you would need an existing XP or Vista install to use it
don't get a prebuilt, I can make a much better build assuming your budget is around £550
£550 for everything and I don't want to build it.
building will get you a much better system, maybe not in overall specs but in quality and upgradability
prebuilts use the cheapest, shittiest motherboards and power supplies they can, which severely limits the parts you can upgrade to without replacing them
take the example in the OP, it's using a socket 775 motherboard which is now dead, to upgrade you're either going to spent 3x more on the CPU or you would have to buy a new mobo and RAM with the cpu
[editline]26th December 2010[/editline]
building takes maybe an hour total and is incredibly easy, just plugging in cables and putting in screws

I would fuck up building a computer. I know you are trying to help butit s out of the question. And I don't know what exactly you are saying when you say 775 motherboard.
A motherboard which uses a socket called 775 for the CPU, it's dead nowadays, meaning there are no CPU's produced for it anymore.

He means the socket the motherboard uses for the CPU. It is basically like the hole you put the CPU in. 775 motherboards are outdated/non-existent.
You have to spend a shitload to upgrade the CPU, or you have to get a new motherboard and RAM and CPU if you want better parts.
you pretty much have to be trying to fuck up, if you can hold a screwdriver and watch a video then you're able to build
and by the motherboard I mean the socket the CPU fits into on the motherboard is of an old standard which means newer CPUs won't fit into it and would require you to buy a new one

take off scansure and it's £555 with delivery, the motherboard will allow you to put in a second GTX 460 later on as a cheaper upgrade than buying a new card better than the 460
the motherboard is socket AM3 which will allow you to upgrade in the future to either one of the better CPUs AMD has now or to one of the ones they'll be releasing early next year

How about this one then? If it comes with everything I could stretch to it. Do currys do trade in?

Thanks reapaninja, I might take you soloution.
if you really don't want to build then the best midpoint would be to find a friend or shop who would put the parts together for you, you might have to pay them but at least you're still guaranteeing you don't get stuck with shitty quality parts and no upgrade paths
I am a mate of "lemongrapes". Reckon he would do it?
