Currently i have 2x4GB sticks. However im thinking about buying another set that's 2x8GB.
Can i put both of them in my MOBO at the same time, assuming they are both the same speed?
What do you plan to use 24GB of memory for anyways?

Stuff.

Right. How about you save that money for when newer and better technology comes out.

Right, thanks for answering my question.

The answer is yes, but don't do it.
You can do it, but only heavy image and video editing requires that much RAM
From what I understand using mismatched RAM sizes makes stuff like dual channel not work which can make things much slower despite the extra RAM.
I imagine it's also a bad idea to mix ones that have different voltages/timings.

It's not like the performance of not using dual channel is noticeable anyways, but it's better to have it.
I ended up getting a second set of 2x4GB for a total of 16GB which worked out fine.
The total came out to $67 for all 4 sticks.

Why? Just why do you need 16GB?
Stop asking him why he needs it. He is asking a question, and you're not helping.

16 is just enough, probably not too much, definitely not too little. He's probably not just gaming.
All these gigabytes. I remember having the same exact question but between a 256MB stick and a 512MB stick.

Yes you can do it is the bottom line, pretty much. Everything everyone above said is said as a precaution.

It's because a lot of people, on this forum and especially in real life, have the misconception that more memory = a faster computer.

Your intentions were good, but the way you went about it was all wrong. Answer his question first, then add a little note saying that >8GB RAM is rather useless unless you're into video editing and all that jazz.
I see no problem with 16GB unless heavily video editing.
8GB seems the optimum these days, but even then I'm stuck on 4.
I had 16GB, once. Now it's back to 8GB because I never needed twice.
I have 16GB of RAM because I can. Sometimes it's fun to set up a RAM disk.
Isn't it possible to put 64Gb of ram in X79 mobo?
I wonder if someday games will require 32Gb of ram minimum :D

Probably, considering we'll probably be able to have terrabytes of RAM eventually.
If you have too much ram, you can set up virtual machines with different OSes. Why do you need that, is another question...
