I would've bought one if I hadn't already bought a Nexus 7 before their announcement.
i didnt even know about this
It's a great device, runs every emulator you can throw at it fullspeed (Some people pay $150+ for devices that can't even run a SNES emulator.)
Streams your PC games with perfect controls. Literally the same controls as a 360 controller, but with a touchscreen on top.
This can emulate N64, PSP, PSX, GBA, DS, and whatever else is a previous generation. Full speed. Been playing Metroid Prime: Hunters with dual analog controls.
Runs native Android games better than any other device on the market.
Can do anything else any other Android device can do.
Specs are crazy good for a $300 pricetag.
I know some people just don't understand portable consoles. I happen to love them, and as a programmer, an open source one with specs better than the 3DS or Vita is incredible to me. I'm very confused as to why is everyone saying "only an idiot would buy this", though. When something like the OpenPandora or the GCW-zero the rolls around, people go crazy about how awesome it is, but this is cast down as garbage?
Thing's got great build quality too. Feels beefy and has beefy specs, too.
I do agree their sales are surprising, though. They ended up having to split the preorders into two batches and you can't get it at pretty much any retailer, even online like at NewEgg. I'm willing to bet that's because of conservative sales projections and production runs, though.

I also really want to see this device succeed. It's a good way to get the foot in the door for open-source gaming.
Also, it's very likely this was an effort on NVidia's part to get NVidia parts rather than AMD parts in the SteamBox, what with the direct big-screen integration that NVidia provides for the SHIELD's streaming.
Does it work with Steam yet?
Does it work with Steam yet?
It works with any game, as long as you can get it to work with a controller.
The streaming feature runs through big picture afaik.
Does it work with Steam yet?
You could stream from your pc to the device with their software called tegra zone, which will have support for steam big picture.
Steam Big Picture is heavily integrated into the SHIELD streaming software. I can't use the streaming software because they haven't released the drivers for laptops yet.
Also I doubt I will be able to on my laptop, because I have a 650+ series GPU, which they say they'll support, but the onboard H264 encoder that I imagine is why the streaming on the SHIELD is so good is part of the Kepler architecture. The GTX 670m is based on the Fermi architecture. Shame. I still use my own software to stream games and it works almost as well, though.

They did confirm that the only reason it works so well is the encoder in Kepler.

well to be fair if i was trying to sell GPU's i would say the same thing.. but just pulling the framebuffer out is like an additional 20ms of latency so I can understand that.
Does it work on AMD cards yet? The game streaming seems to be the only selling factor for me. I already have a phone capable enough to run emulators at full speed.

People that love playing games when they aren't home?
So it's basically Ouya except better in every single thing and with not shit hardware?
Wait, but then it means it's not ouya at all. Hmm.
It surprises me that so many companies are pushing out or planning to push out android based "game systems." I haven't ever seen anyone say they want an OUYA or really want to play android games on their TV. The emulation and using it as a media center seems like a good idea but you can get that feature from a $40 android stick
The Shield is the first 'handheld' I've wanted in years, the PSVita just seems "eh" to me but the Shield for some reason sticks out as something that I could really get to like.
Can it stream your desktop or is it just games?

It only streams games. If the touch screen works like a mouse/touch controller on the PC, you might be able to use your desktop by adding a shortcut to it in Steam somehow and somewhat use your PC.
Maybe now it's open source we can do something like that, that would be interesting to see.

You sure about that one? And the SHIELD is about playing games off your TV, not on the TV, even though that feature is there (HDMI-mini and wireless through Miracast, which is cool if you have a smart TV).
I was literally able to walk into my cousin's house the other day and play Mario Kart 64 with him on his TV, all wirelessly. Him with a PS3 controller connected to my SHIELD, me with the built-in controls, and Miracast'd to his TV.
The Ouya has shit specs, shit software support, terrible OS, and is attached to your TV. Wasn't very well executed.

Nvidia basically took an Ouya, removed everything that makes it an Ouya, made it good instead, added a screen, and sold it

Also apparently you can use it as controller for Xbox controller supported games which is pretty ballin'.
