For those unaware, up until this expansion moon mining has always been automated. Drop a POS (Player Owned Structure) on a moon and set up the relevant mining equipment and you are practically printing ISK. (Game currency, after the mined resource is transported to a trade hub and sold etc) This has been the major reason that large alliances have such a large wallet / monthly income for quite some time, its pretty passive. Has been the major driving force behind large battles and campaigns from various entities. A major problem for CCP (The Devs of EVE) is that all of the games code for POS' and their structures was written essentially as spaghetti and has caused a huge amount of issues over the years. The idea behind the new citadels that were introduced is to replace POS' and their function, finally all POS functions are going to be disabled soon once these new industrial citadels are active. WABAM NEWSFALSH, moon mining is no longer going to be passive with the replacement citadels. They will now have to be manually mined by players in the relevant industrial ships, this is a huge change. Hopefully means more content for all seeing as now these players will need to be defended in some way or another, this also means no more huge amounts of passive income for large alliances. Yet. As you can see by the artwork and some videos on youtube, the citadel essentially fires a big ass... something... at the moon and rips part of it away into space. This takes time to complete (More specifically the citadel will tell you when its finished pulling it away from the moon, takes a few days) so the miners will have a chance to prepare and get the relevant setup / protection if needed. Along with alllllllll of this a whole new set of minerals and materials, speculation is huge with people and entities hording hundreds of billions upon billions worth of the current moon goo (nick name for any stuff that comes from moons) in the hopes of dictating the market within the first two weeks of the expansion.
