• Something that can run Source games on high

I live in the US. I will need an OS. Make it as cheap as possible please. :buddy:
Whats your budget, ideal OS and what games would you be looking at? 'cause this is a good time where fairly cheap builds can in fact be pretty good and play some pretty demanding games out there. Well.. Providing your budget isn't like $200.
Especially since Source doesn't need much to max it any more.
Windows 7, and my budget is around $400. I know it's tight, but I can't do any better than that.
Do you get any student discounts?
Unfortunately, no. [editline]7th November 2010[/editline] And they don't have to run at high, I just want to have my FPS above 40. [editline]7th November 2010[/editline] Alright, I just called up my friend he said I could have his spare copy of Vista. So I'll go with that. All I need the is main computer. (I already have a mouse, keyboard, etc.)

Otherwise, still very good and cheap for Source games
spinpoint HDDs are god awful
You're like the only one on FP who doesn't worship them.
spinpoint HDDs are god awful
I'm not sure if this is a joke or not, but you are wrong.
You're like the only one on FP who doesn't worship them.
Spinpoints have the best value per dollar at the moment.
Thanks guys!
wheres the OS why the fuck did you put an IDE dvd drive in there
I honestly didn't notice that, changed it. [editline]9th November 2010[/editline]
spinpoint HDDs are god awful
Haha, No.
For the video card, you could get by with a GTS 430 for $65 and play source games well. If you want to be cheap, that is. [editline]9th November 2010[/editline] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187121&Tpk=gts%20430
GTS 430 and Radeon 4850 aren't even in the same class, are they?
Nope, they sure aren't, and that's why I posted it. Much more bang for the buck.
But I think that's out of his budget, though.
But I think that's out of his budget, though.
Not really, it's 30$ more.
spinpoint HDDs are god awful
Absolutely not. Absolutely not.
But I think that's out of his budget, though.
His budget's 400 dollars. A 4850 and everything else will cost him a total of 388 dollars. The GTS 430 is a horrible card.

Not that far from a 8800/9800 GT which has 112 SPs, and the 9800 GT can still run games just great, mostly maxing out all new games, give or take a few.
By source games, do you mean TF2? because that's another animal, it requires a fast processor rather than a great graphics card, unlike the rest of the Source games.

[editline]10th November 2010[/editline] It doesn't make any sense
I'm not.
By source games, do you mean TF2? because that's another animal, it requires a fast processor rather than a great graphics card, unlike the rest of the Source games.
Whoever disagreed with this is wrong. TF2 is pretty CPU heavy. [editline]10th November 2010[/editline] Nothing like GTA IV, but its above average.
