Hey, this probably isn't the best place to ask about this but I'll give it a shot. I recently got a Quantum ValueLoader DLT VS80 (http://www.quantum.com/serviceandsupport/softwareanddocumentationdownloads/valueloader/index.aspx) and it came with SCSI cables, a SCSI card and a terminator. I didn't realize this until it was too late but they guy that I got it from gave me an Adaptec AHA-2944UW and apparently this card only support HVD (High Voltage Differential) SCSI devices. The tape drive is a LVD (Low Voltage Differential) drive but the cable is the same for both the HVD and LVD.
Here's the problem, the tape drive isn't detected in the SCSI BIOS. I tried swapping out the SCSI card for a AHA-3950U2B which does support LVD SCSI devices but that card isn't recognizing the device either. Could it have destroyed the tape drive by plugging it into a HVD SCSI port? The drive powers up fine and I can use the interface on the front to load, unload, inventory the tapes, etc. Is it possible that the terminator was damaged by plugging it into a HVD card? Anybody worked with these before that can help me out?
I'm just posting to ask, what do you do for a living? It seems we work somewhat in the same field. Unfortunately I don't know anything about tape drives, but I'll definitely google for you.

Found a little tidbit.

How About LVD-HVD Compatibility?
So now we have shown compatibility between LVD and SE SCSI. What about HVD SCSI? I am sorry to have to tell you that there is no more direct compatibility between LVD and HVD SCSI than there is between HVD and SE SCSI. It does not exist. Placing an LVD device on an HVD bus will cause the LVD device to shut down. Placing an HVD device on an LVD bus will cause the entire LVD bus to shut down.
So it sounds like connecting a LVD device to an HVD card won't actually hurt anything, just cause your drive to turn off. Maybe there's something wrong with your drive?
LDV devices are usually protected against HDV input. I would try a different terminator.
And now that I think about it, maybe the cable is bad. If possible, try re-pinning it or obtaining a new one altogether.

Broke my automerge!
:argh:

I work with a couple of small businesses that deal with cartography just doing stuff like system maintenance, backups, repairs, and miscellaneous computer related tasks. I actually don't get this kind of stuff from work as these places don't even have a dedicated IT guy, they're really just trying to keep afloat. Most of their systems are pre 2000 machines.
It's a relief to hear that the HVD card didn't damage it. It is a possibility that the unit doesn't actually work, I got it from a guy on www.usedottawa.com for free. He said it worked but then again he was giving away for nothing so who knows. It does appear to be functional though, as I can issue commands to it via the interface on the front.

I'll give that a try, I'll need to scrounge up a 68 pin low power terminator from somewhere though. I have a bunch of SCSI junk kicking around but its all 50 pin.

That's going to be something else I'll need to find, though this seems like it would be easier to come across than a new terminator.
Thanks for the help!
