Does it matter where on the Motherboard you plug in the SATA Cables?

Make sure you are plugging HDD's and SSD's into the first two or four ports on the mobo. These are usually faster than the others. ODDs can go wherever.

Seriously, I once had a guy plug his SSD into the CPU Power port.

On my AsRock Z77 Extreme4 it's the last 4 ports that's the faster 6Gb/s ones, 2 on a different coloured Marwell port.
And how the fuck? Did he mod the sata or something?

Brute force. The thing was basically mashed into the port with all the internal dividers crushed.

I've had people bring me computers with the floppy power connector plugged into the optical drive sound input on the motherboard, or even using the floppy ribbon cable on the optical drive by bending the fuck out of the pins and forcing it on. And I've seen many other atrocities, someone doing what that guy did really doesn't surprise me anymore.
