It's always sad to hear someone's hard work being cut out and never used.
I just hope whoever comes in next doesn't butcher the unique world that she created. There was a lot about the world we never knew about, it seemed so interesting.
Kind of upsetting, but is she talking about the latest Tomb Raider? Because i really doubt she is.
Still a bit worried that the only trailer we've seen for Mirror's Edge 2 was primarily combat-based. Of course it could just be to grab people's attention, but it doesn't bode well for the future I feel.
i didnt realize the new mirror's edge was going to be a "reboot".
...why?
I think the writer meant "prequel"
Or not? Because apparently it's also just called "Mirror's Edge"? I'm confused.

It's a reboot.
making a reboot is pretty pointless. probably just an excuse to fuck with the writing of the characters and the world. which is a shame.
Possibly an excuse to make a game that isn't Mirror's Edge.

I don't care much about the characters and the world is awesome, but just because they're changing it doesn't mean they're changing it for the worse.
As long the visuals stay clean and awesome and the gameplay doesn't move towards more combat the game is far from ruined.
Just because a game is changing a lot compared to its predecessor and is a AAA game published by a major publisher doesn't mean it's bad. Just take Far Cry 3 for example which is widely regarded as the best of the series.
Other recent examples of the top of my mind: AC Black Flag or Shadow Warrior (not AAA, but still).

But we're talking about EA so disregard my post and abandon all hope.

How is it a shame? The original game had a bog-standard story and practically soulless characters.
Kate was by far the worst, practically just a mcguffin with legs.

Not really, because the writing and the characters in the original were terrible. I mean, just atrociously bad. The game had a cool concept and unique gameplay mechanics, and was generally pretty fun, but the writing and voice acting were among the worst I've ever seen from a major title.
So they put an idiot in charge of gameplay (a hypocrite at that - a feminist who thinks the controls are too hard for girls) and then the writer isn't coming back? This could really work as a sequel. Things are obviously more futuristic - you could be Faith's daughter in a world where things got worse after the events of the first.
Them ditching everything that made the original great shows how shitty this will most likely be.
Is this a reboot in the same sense as the recently released Stanley Parable being a reboot of the less developed mod? I was hoping for like, a brand new story to follow.

I haven't seen much from the new title yet, but ME's control scheme would benefit from a once-over (maybe even a twice-over). It wasn't difficult, but it was a bit clunky feeling, and took a lot of warming up to in order to get a good feel for it. At least in my opinion!

I'm with you there. At first I hated the controls, since I played it first on the 360, but after trying it on the PC it works but it definitely could use some work. Larger FOV if anything.
Though, for me, the worst part about Mirror's Edge will always be the completely bad, bad, bad story.

I agree it needs work but that has nothing to do with the fact the new head of gameplay is an idiot.

How the fuck can you reboot something that isn't even a series? It's Mirror's Edge *the game," not the series, yet. Terrible marketing idea.
Rebooting the series isn't necessarily a bad thing. There's honestly not much lost as long as they maintain the core feeling of the series.
I really don't mind it at all if it means that it can be about what it was originally marketed to be: A game about freerunning through a city to deliver secure packages.
That being said, the only trailer we've seen doesn't fill me much hope. What I wanted from the Mirror's Edge was the first trailer. It was... inspiring for lack of better word. In a world full of brown and bloom shooters it was such a breath of fresh air. The music, the themes, the art design, it was all brilliant. It's still a damn good trailer and although the final gameplay wasn't too far off, I feel like there was something lost in the original when the it became about more than just being a Runner.

Oh yeah, and it still blows me away that Mirror's Edge was done on the king of brown and bloom: Unreal Engine 3.

UE3? Wasn't it Frostbite?

Oops, somehow it didn't even saved my answer or something. I meant to say, isn't it Frostibe, not Ue3?
Apparently its going to be more combat oriented too.. My hopes for improved fluid parkour mechanics from the original have faded.. Now it's going to become just pew pew jump pew pew press x to win pew pew jump
im holding my expectations until i see some gameplay but the thing about the "feminist" who tought gameplay was too hard for fellow feminist girls was the most stupid statement i have ever heard
literally, all you have to do to master gameplay is look at someting and press JUMP, how is that hard?
I was just hoping they didn't fuck with the style of the game too much. It wasn't futuristic, just modern and clean. It made you think that the amount of surveillance and censorship could happen in any major city, but looking at the trailer with the guards with the weird visors I don't have a lot of faith.
I want this to be a good game so bad but I feel like everything that has happened involving the game is making it shitty.

It was supposed to be, but the Frostbite engine wasn't ready at the time so they went with UE3 instead. They used custom lighting solutions developed between DICE and Illuminate, that I imagine were borrowed or inspired by the WIP Frostbite engine of the time. It's why the game has such a unique look despite being on UE3.
I hadn't heard about Sarkeesian getting hired for the new game though, that's news to me. I hate to be that guy, but I seriously hope she has a very limited influence over the game's design decisions. Mirror's Edge's problems all had nothing to do with the core gameplay. They were all in the map design and story.
Kind of upsetting, but is she talking about the latest Tomb Raider? Because i really doubt she is.
She was the writer for the latest Tomb Raider.

then why not leave "mirrors edge" alone as it was? why not write mirrors edge 2? you can write in more characters.
why does it NEED to be a reboot? what is the purpose?

Because it's not safe enough.
I almost wish ME never had any dialogue. Just the world and exploration to tell the story. Kind of Half Life 2 without cutscenes. All the cutscenes in ME ruined it along with the forced in-game cutscenes.
I really just wish the world would come back in a game with no combat.
I don't know what's up with you guys, I could totally see this game work with some fast, minimalistic combat, one that works with the free running and not just being an area where everything stops so you can kick some fags in the face and then awkwardly move towards the next free running area.
Also, you are forgetting that this is supposed to be an open world game, which has a huge effect on the free running, story and fighting.
I think this will either be a good game or is a disaster in the making, but either way the original vision of Mirror's Edge is getting a bit fucked in the ass.
