A new game by Paradox was finally born, this time in space.
Anyone got this game - any first-hand opinions?

Just got done playing it for 5 hours straight.
Going to just do some general stuff for those not initiated with Grand Strategy or 4x:
Pros -
- Simple UI
- Extremely custom, make things your way
- Interesting AI, tends to be different every time
- Lots of mods/ability to mod
- Expansive game with a long playtime
- Lots of random events to keep things spicy
Cons -
- Sluggish midgame, which will drive many people away+kill hype on the spot. Once people get to be about equal size, you enter Thumb Twiddling Simulator 2016
- AI cheats from time to time
- Annoying aspects (Mainly, you will 100% be called into wars if your ally goes to war with someone. Be prepared to sit there for 25+ years since you cant reach the enemy, also certain aspects of diplomacy are greyed out)
- Weird glitches in regards to camera not focusing where it should
Overall, I'd give it a solid 8.5/10. It's a pretty good game and I highly recommend it. Pricey, sure, but it feels worth it.

It's meh at the moment, just like any Paradox game at release.
Give it like 4 expansions and it should be great.

The only game I've ever played from them was Cities: Skylines and I pre-ordered it and fell in love immediately. I'll be checking this out when I get paid next week, I have faith and I've heard pretty good things so far.
If anything is meh it's the expansions for their games, you've got it backwards imo.

I think he's talking about Paradox Development Studio games, not Paradox Interactive games. As in EU, Crusader Kings, HoI, etc.
So is this 'easier' (as in, less complicated) to play than EU IV, or more?

I watched a bit of the pre-release streams and I could get into it almost immediately.
There's some getting to know the UI and some getting used to the fact that the galaxy map and the system view are two seperate things but it's not very difficult to grasp it.

Paradox Development Studio =/= Paradox Interactive.
CK2, EU4, HoI3 (and probably HoI4 next month) were meh on release. They don't truly shine until they get a couple of DLC/expansions which fleshes out the parts of the games that were lacking. Paradox games aren't static games, they change constantly and receive new updates and expansions all the time to add more depth and enjoyment to their games.
I've played about 6 hours of Stellaris so far and it is very meh, there's not much depth at the moment which I'm sure future DLC/expansions will fix. Stellaris is a solid base game for Paradox to build upon.
Also expansions being meh? Obviously you don't have a lot of experience with Paradox games.

There are quite a few similarities with EU4 but it's not EU4 in space. It's simpler and more streamlined at the moment and not nearly as confusing as EU4 is.

EUIV (and this) interest me a lot but i'm an incompetent fucktard so I couldn't really get into EUIV

If you watch some of the streams, it's very easy to get a good handle on things.
The in-game tutorial is basically a dude who sits there and says "X does Y", and is actually helpful unlike the "tutorials" from CK2/EUIV.
It's a very simple game despite being complex in nature, if you enjoyed EUIV you'd probably enjoy this.
Was somewhat bored by this game tbh, then again this is the closest I've come to liking a paradox game. It's a shame because it has tons of cool things like species, government types, military choices for even small things (clones and robots), civil rights, ect but I spent two hours dicking around in three solar systems got yelled at for not instantly responding to some aliens flying through my three province empire then got bored to tears from the ui and buildings.
You can recruit governors to watch over and maintain sectors but they rarely build anything and don't build fleets, so I have to micro manage having ships being militia when they should be protecting the borders
What I'd do for a Total War game in space.. It's a shame since Star Wars: Forces of Corruption is the closest I'll probably ever get to that and it doesn't even have diplomacy so you're always at war with the two other factions..
Any opinions on the diplomacy sytem in this game?
That's usually where most 4x games fall a bit short.

It's pretty good, when you make first contact you need to send a scientist to figure out how to communicate with them.
Traits also effect things, so a peace loving xenophile civilization is much more likely to form a good relationship than a militaristic xenophobic civilization. Fallen Empires tend to dislike all other civilizations from what I've seen
You get the basic things you'd come to expect, trade agreements, alliances, puppet states, so on and so forth. I heard you can "absorb" other factions if they want to but I didn't see that before I refunded it
