• I need some help with buying hardware...

Hi guys, So, my birthday's coming up in the middle of February, and I'm trying to finalize my decisions early so my parents and I can discuss the things I asked for so it doesn't seem like a waste of their and my money. Please forgive me, I am not too experienced with computer hardware. I would also like to note that I am an avid FPS player (the newer games look like ass with my setup). First, let me give you my setup: Intel Core Duo @ 2.00GHz 2gb of RAM NVidia GeForce 8600 GT, which has 256mb dedicated graphics memory, and can only run up to DirectX 9. A totally shitty Dell 2.1 speaker set. (The sound goes out often, and when that happens I have to kick the subwoofer to get the jack all the way back in.) A 19" Dell LCD 1400x900 monitor, which is pretty bad. I also have a 250gb hard drive which has about 15gb left. Windows Vista 32 bit, which I think is the most abominable OS in existence. If it were a person, I would blow its brains out. I'd like to note that my computer's hardware has not changed a single bit since 2007, which is when my father bought it for the family. I have been wanting to change the hardware since 2008. I am planning to replace all of the items above over the next four months, but for now, I only want to replace the CPU, the graphics card, and the monitor. Here is the list I am going to ask for: Intel i3-550 4mb dual-core @ 3.06GHz An EVGA NVidia GeForce 460 SE 1gb w/HDPC and 2x DVI port. An ASUS 23" 2ms HDMI widescreen monitor. Now, my question is, is the hardware I'm asking for going to be a reasonable upgrade from my previous experience? I'm looking for a higher-range setup, but not too expensive. Also, if I buy a new CPU, will I have to buy more Memory (i.e. 4gb) to go along with it? Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot, Drumstixxxes P.S. sorry again for my inexperience :downsbravo:
if you were to upgrade the CPU, you would have to upgrade the MOBO along with the RAM. whats your budget?
I wanted to just upgrade the RAM to make the computer a bit faster. I want my parents to only spend max about $400-450 for my birthday altogether. The monitor's $180, the card's $170, and the ram's about $125. I am asking for other stuff for my birthday as well, but I'm planning on buying the RAM myself, since I going to make about $700 from percussion gigs over the next three months.
What Motherboard do you have? You prolly need to buy DDR2 ram, but it is old so better gain some more money and get new mobo + DDR3 ram.
