Simple question, does windows 7 need to be installed on a clean drive, or could I use a drive with stuff already on it, and not lose those files?

Install Win7 on the partition.
but you must create an empty partition
You don't have to.
I think it would move all files in Windows.old folder.
If you have a current Windows installation, you may boot into that installation and use the Upgrade option from the DVD like any program on a DVD. Or boot into the CD and install to the partition. If you have plenty of space, it will move important documents and shit from the old partition to C:/Windows.old.
