Did you update your free copy of AVG 2011 today, in the hopes of evading a nasty bug? In a set of mildly familiar circumstances, the antivirus company has inadvertently unleashed an even nastier one. Users running 64-bit editions of Windows 7 and AVG 2011 are reporting a STOP error after a mandatory antivirus update this morning, which is keeping some from booting their machines into Windows at all. The buggy update has since been pulled and there are a couple ways to preemptively keep it from happening if you're staring at the message above, but if you've already been stung, you're looking at some quality time with a recovery disc or repair partition to fix your Windows boot files.

Well isn't that just lovely?

ha ha
Oops.
... I use 64-bit 7 and AVG Free.
But I didn't get an update or anything this morning.
Am I just that lucky that AVG just sat there derping, completely missing said update??
[editline]3rd December 2010[/editline]
Wait... Nvm it did update.
But I never was prompted to restart.
Fuck, what do I do??
edit2:
I just forcefully updated again. Should I be safe?
I have NO recovery discs.
Stupid prebuilt didn't come with one...
What's funny is reading the thread about McAfee killing 800 000 computers, seeing people who do "AVG > McAfee"
Really, it's hilarious seeing how ignorant fanboys can get.
Never mind, I think I'm safe.
I didn't get a reboot prompt and I re-updated it to be safe.
I hope I'm alright. This is the only tolerable to use computer in the house. :saddowns:
Avast in Silent/Gamer mode... not one hiccup, slowdown, or interruption, even on this Pentium 4 with 768MB RAM.
:siren: Breaking news! AVG Antivirus sued for data loss! :siren:

Prebuilt PC? Check.
User refused to MAKE recovery discs when setting up the prebuilt? Check.
Using AVG, Check.
Wow, you're off to a great start there pal.

I'm not using a prebuilt of my own desire. It was a quick emergency replacement basically for when my laptop crapped out.
Also I never knew I had to make recovery discs. This has a recovery partition which I assume works the same basically...
What's wrong with AVG? It's good if you're not dealing with shady things all the time. And it causes no preformance loss on my end.
I run scans with MBAM every week just to make sure AVG didn't miss anything and it never has yet to. *Knock on wood*

Recovery partitions do work like the recovery disk.
I'm pretty sure the .iso for the recovery disk is offered free. If not...
Linux is waiting for you in open arms.
As I thought, thanks for telling me. I wasn't sure at all.
And about the .iso thing, I'll check that some other time...
Oh wow. The family PC is running AVG on 32-bit Windows 7 and my laptop is running Avast on 64-bit Windows 7. Glad those aren't switched around!
So this is what fucking happened to my laptop, what the hell is this shit AVG?
Yay, my laptop uses AVG in Windows XP 32bit and my desktop uses Microsoft Security Essentials in Win7 64bit. I am amused now.
glad i switched to avast a month ago
Kaspersky.
Anti Virus software is more of a virus than what they're supposed to find.
Good thing I have MSE
I really don't understand why people don't use MSE it is pretty good
