Good to see an MMO actually go free to play instead of just giving us a free demo and forcing us to buy to actually play.
I might try this out then. For once, a F2P mmo won't make me want to shove a white hot branding iron in the ass of the developpers. I'm looking at you, Bioware.
I played during the first month of release, I wonder if I'm counted as veteran or at least have my old character left.
While its nice to see no apparent restrictions on how much money you can carry or trade as well as apparently no chat restrictions, unless they have people monitoring trades and such 24/7 they are probably gonna see an explosion of Real Money Trade.
I didn't know TOR's list was so idiotic, christ :v: it just makes it seem more like a fucked up joke.
This is even better if you have the pre-order bonus from Defiance. You get RIFT + all the expansions for free, so you pretty much get the full game now forever.
Eh, the article is not entirely right. There's a few advantages to being a monthly subscriber for Rift:

I like it.

Patron Summons I subscribed for about 6+ months straight to get the reward for a summonable Banker. Now they're giving away that just for a sub.

Unlike most F2P models who take the game and make it as annoying and inconvenient to play as possible and expect people to pay up to remove those road blocks. You do get bonuses for subscribing, but the point of the article is definitely true: This is how the F2P model should work. I just hope it does well. I know for a fact that I will support it myself purely out of distaste for what SWTOR tries to do for it's consumers. [editline]15th May 2013[/editline] To be fair, TERA is the same way for the most part too. You don't really lose much of anything for a free player besides minor convenience or cosmetic bonuses and the impulse to buy is more "Look at all this cool shit you can get" and less "Frustrated because you can't play with your friends? Pay $20 please"
I kind of got back into SWTOR and TERA at the same time a couple of months ago after only playing them a little on release. The difference in experiences I had between the two was laughable. In TERA I gained a few achievements and a title for already purchasing the game, other than that I didn't notice much of a difference. In SWTOR I wasn't even allowed to display any of my titles without paying, never mind getting any for already paying for the damn game. I just kept on seeing the same cash shop button plastered all over the UI trying to sell me basic functionality. Just a horrible way of running a free to play game, the way to do it is to add value for paying customers rather than taking away from the basic functionality for free to play customers.
