• Tips for a dual monitor setup?

I'm about to buy a second identical monitor (ASUS VS248H-P) for the first time and I just wanted to know if there's any essential software I need or should use to make the most of it. I see a bunch of software floating around google but don't make any sense of it :v: I don't plan on gaming on the two monitors. I'm running Windows 8 Pro.
Windows 8 has great multi-monitor support (desktop management, wallpaper stuff etc.). Much better than 7 or any previous Windows. You really don't need any extra software, IMO.
http://www.displayfusion.com/ I currently use this. Windows does the job fine without software but if you want to customize it more then try this.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll check out Display Fusion. I also had a another question. What would be the process to go from a game on my main monitor to control the second one? For example, looking something up while I'm playing a game without ALT+TAB'ing out of it. Is there a keyboard shortcut or something?

You can run many games at your screens' native resolution, in windowed mode with noborder enabled and it'll look more or less like a fullscreen game but you'll be able to click out of it/take focus away from it without making it minimize

There are also programs to remove borders from windows, atleast for 7, dunno if it works on 8.

Hitting the invisible 2x2 pixel start menu button is hell, with a monitor on the left of the main screen.
people do main to the right? ewww
That's what works best on my desk, I'm sure there's a lot of set ups where this is true. And if you think the start 'button' on windows 8 is hard to hit, just use the windows key on your keyboard. That's what I do.
The fuck? Main on the right that's just awkward. I've trained myself for 10+ years that the main is in the bottom left-most corner.
Just slightly offset it so you can easily reach the topright 'X' and on the other monitor you can reach the bottom right start menu.

Thanks for all the info! I just placed the order and will be joining the multi-monitor club soon! Now to decide how to arrange my speakers :v:

[editline]17th April 2013[/editline] I don't think anything using two monitors requires calibration like that, unless you're gaming.

- Use a solid black wallpaper on secondary monitor(s) to avoid having to turn them off when you don't want distracted - For the above reason and because it's a rat's ass from a UX perspective (in my opinion) don't use a double taskbar setup - 99% of the features offered by DisplayFusion and similar applications are gimmicks and/or unintuitive to the point of being useless
I have never been distracted by a wallpaper on a secondary monitor personally.
I have never been distracted by a wallpaper on a secondary monitor personally.
I actually turn off seperate monitors when playing CS:GO competitive, or just when I want serious practice to get into shape.. because I'm behind now =( [editline]19th April 2013[/editline]
I used it back when it was only for multi-monitor backgrounds. Now it has a bunch of stuff and I don't really care anymore :v: I either use one wallpaper that just goes on both, or I do one of those dual-screen ones.
I have always used UltraMon and it has never let me down. Although I haven't gotten a chance to try it on Windows 8, it's always been my Windows 7 standby.
Winkey + Left/Right arrow key.
Winkey + Left/Right arrow key.
winkey + shift + left/right arrow key*
I think Windows 8 has much worse multi-monitor support. I turn my other monitors off when gaming, or watching a fullscreen video, but I wouldn't personally consider making my wallpaper permanently black because of that. Easier just to turn it off. Also I use utlramon on windows 7, it's all I need.
people do main to the right? ewww
Are you expecting to have my second, third AND fourth monitor to the right?
As long as you have the correct graphics card and correct drivers Windows 8 will manage your dual monitors pretty well!
Most of you clearly haven't used Windows 8 There is a 6 pixel catch at the edges of the monitors. If you slide you mouse along the bottom, it'll not transfer over to the next monitor. This means you can just slide your mouse over to the start menu at the bottom left of your right monitor and hit it every time, or hit the X at the top right of your left monitor and close it because it stops it from going over.
