There is no covenant anymore.
The races that were in the covenant all went their separate ways. Its not like the covenant was the only thing these races were apart of, all the races of the covenant had their own homeworlds with their own governments. Now there simply is no covenant and all those races are now independent.
The elites didn't join the UNSC either, the humans still hate them for destroying 95% of humanity. They are just at peace, maybe a military alliance.
The only race that still wants to kill humanity are the Brutes, and every other race doesn't like them very much and the Brutes fell hard after the covenant fell apart.
They don't look very Forerunner, but they look more Forerunner then they look Covenant.
Plus it can't be the Covenant anyways.
I hope to see more of the Forerunners this time, perhaps a new enemy.
The crawler looks more Half Life then Halo. And if it's Halo it looks more like the flood then any other species I've seen.

There are not that many images about the Forerunners so it could be them.

I'd expect them to be gray and streamlined. I dunno, it's just the feeling I've gotten from 343 Guilty Spark, their architecture, Sentinels and the concept art of the Forerunners.
I thought it was the race before the Forerunners that Halo 4 was about.

I'm still slightly in doubt about Halo 4, i enjoyed everything from Halo 1 to Halo Reach but this is a new studio.

the new studio is made up of former Bungie employees who worked on the previous games.

The concept art was the official look of the Forerunners though, if i remember it correctly there was a 3D model of it in Halo Reach

It won't. Forerunners are "protectors" who actively tried to preserve all life. It wouldn't make sense that they try to kill humanity since they picked humanity as their successors.

Precursors, at the moment we dont know who we're fighting but they are one of the most likely candidates.
Anyone else notice that the picture of cortana on that box looks a little odd also I don't recall the spartan armor from the halo 4 gameplay videos looking like that, something tells me this thing is fake

That is her new look, Cortana has had many new looks, it was already explained why. Gee, I wonder why you don't recall seeing that Armor in any of the 2-3 Halo 4 gameplays.. Perhaps because it wasn't shown off yet?

The covenant is the name of the military alliance regrouping pretty much every single alien race apart from Humans.
In Halo 2 the elites split away from the Covenant and soon after joined forces with the humans.
At the end of Halo 3, the Covenant is pretty much falling apart as all of its most important leaders are dead.

100k years before Halo, Humans were a dominant force in the galaxy and were conquered by the Forerunners. So yea, could be an old human planet that hasn't been touched in hundreds of thousands of years.
